Hi

My Outlaws A170 has a really bad squeel from the steering when you make any kind of turn. Worse still the the steering is tight (too tight) it is feeling like it may stick. To me it feels like it is sticking inside the car on the column. It certanly sound like it. Can anybody tell me if there is a bush inside the car behind the steering shroud? If yes is it replaceable?

Many Thanks

Bruce

Check the fluid level. Low levels can cause strange noises.

168 or 169 ?

There are a couple of UJ's on the 168 that are never greased , one is in the engine bay to the right of the engine and is covered with a rubber gaiter. Peel it back and pack the joint with moly grease.

The other one is under the dash , drivers side , do the same.

The fluid level in the pump is critical to get right , from underfilled to over filled is literally a 'splash' of liquid. Make sure the car is level and cool when you measure it.

The one under the dash. How would I get to it?

Just look up from the pedals , you'll see the UJ.

I'd have to agree with Bobby Dazzler, check the fluid level and condition of the power steering fluid first. If there is a filter in the fluid resovoir, check that as well as it probably won't have ever been changed.

It would also be worth getting someone to turn the steering wheel while you're outside the car and listening where the squel is coming from.
