A180 Avantgarde Blue EFFICIENCY (1.7 Petrol)
I have an A170 Avantgarde Blue Efficiency petrol on order (Factory build - 3 months max delivery forecast ....To be built June 09)

My dealer has just informed me last week that MB have notified him that they are to redesignate all petrol A170's to A180.....but still keeping the 1.7 litre petrol engine.

Previously all A180's were diesel engined.

Anyone heard of this or know why MB are doing this?

Yes, that is correct.

In Germany, MB offer only the 5 door model now with:

A160 95 bhp 157-166 CO2
A160 BlueEddiciency 95 bhp 139-143 CO2 man only
A160 Cdi 82 bhp 142-154 CO2
A180 116 bhp 157-169 CO2
A180 BlueEfficieny 116 bhp 146-148 CO2 man only
A180 Cdi 109 bhp 134-154 CO2
A200 136 bhp 156-176 CO2
A200 Cdi 140 bhp 135-159 CO2
A200 Turbo 193 bhp 178-192 CO2

I have driven the A180 Blue Efficiency as a rental car and was impressed by the Start/Stop function. Took a while to get used to the fact that when you put the gearbox into neutral and let the clutch go, engine stops. Starts seamlessly once you press the clutch down again.

It's been quite a few years now that MB decided not to stick to the engine cc size designating the badging. BMW are the same too. I believe the numbers are more of a general guide on how that model fits in the range; from entry level to premium.

So when they eventually go to warp drive it should be called the "A-Light"

Thanks for the prompt reply:)

I am advised that for the UK market the Start/Stop function has been modified from current production so that you no longer have to keep your foot on the footbrake (and upset the driver behind you).

This was apparently modified following criticism from owners and the motoring press.................I am getting quite impatient now!

Seems a bit odd to rebrand the A150 as A160 and A170 as A180 when the engines technical specs etc are still the same as before. I would have thought the name change would have corresponded with a slight power boost (say 5bhp) to make it a better rival for the Audi A3/ VW Golf etc, but it seems Merc think otherwise.

Also on a similar topic, I have always wondered if both A150 and A170 share the same 1600cc block and have different ECU mappings, as it seems weird that they would spend money developing two odd capacity engines with similar bhp figures, if they are only going to be used in two cars that already cost a lot to produce. I know with the BMW 1-Series for instance the 116i, 118i and 120i all share the same 2.0 block.

The A150 has a 1498 cc engine and the A170 has a 1699cc engine

Not sure if they share a common block

The redesignated A160 and A180 do not gain any BHP over the previous spec.

Yeah thats what Merc say, but I suspect they might both be 1600cc

I am sorry but how can you say that the 1699cc engine in the A170 can be 1600cc ? ................Quart in a pint pot??.............It does not add up;):)

Carried out some more research:

The A150 engine is M266.920

The A170 engine is M266.940

Are they the same blocks.............anyone?

Sorry yes your right about the A170, it was late last night when I wrote that post so must have got confused.

There dosent seem to be a lot of info on the M266 engines on the web

My interest at present is in the E-classes, but they are doing similar things across the range
The 320cdi has become the 350cdi, but with tweaks to increase both economy & power.
The new petrol 350 cgi has approx 20bhp more power & better economy/emissions than the old 350cgi
It may be that you car will get a few extra bhp. I think it is a good thing that you are getting the updated model even though it was already on order as it may improve the resale/residual value & hopefully you will benefit from upgrades. Just hope that ignorant insurer will not increase premium!
In my experience the dealerships rarely know the fine details of revisions & optional extras that potential/owners have a strong interest in...

Many MB dealer that I have came across don't have a clue about engine and spec. One even told me once that I knew more than him!

There is no increase in power for the A150/ A170, I checked the German MB website and power, torque, acceleration and economy figures are all still exactly the same. Very confusing..
