I still have Ian B Walkers post on my mind about his CPU experience. lets just hope it was some kind of misunderstanding.
I would like to think it was a missunderstanding, hope everything goes well for you. keep us updated M8

Woohoooo

Got my baby back!

Picked up the car today, all looks good so far, the car sounds great but I want to have a good poke around under the bonnet at lunch and have a good look around to make sure all is in order. Although the coolant system has been flushed many times already, I recon I will probably be doing flushes every weekend for a month or so to get the rest of the oil out of the coolant system as there is still traces of oil in there.

Something colin picked up on that had been missed by both George and Andy is that there was a vacuum hose from the inlet manifold that would normally be connected to the gearbox on an auto model. Mine being the manual, it should have been blanked off.... but it wasnt. The car had consequently been running lean and judging by the state of the valves, it had most likely been this way for some time.

Colin Ferns workshop? I am impressed with both his and their mechanics knowledge. I kind of like the fact that the mechanics are not overloaded with work like some of the other independants are. and can therefore devote more undivided attention to your car without endless interuptions. What's not so good however is they they dont work Saturdays, and shut up shop at 5pm everyday. Still, if the jobs done right, for the right price then who can argue.

My only gripe was the fact that I noticed my rear bumper had been slightly scraped whilst in the workshop. True to form, Colin admitted that he too had seen the scrape and didnt remember it being there when I bought the car in. He has agreed to sort it and get it sprayed up at my convenience in the near future. oh well, accidents sometimes happen I guess!

Whilst there this morning, they were working on a S600 V12 AMG with whopping 20" wheels and ganksta blacked up windows all round. So he's obviously not phased by big V12 lumps nor more modern Electronic trickery.

Wow, another recommended specialist in the book. Glad all is ok, i may be sending you a pm if i need anything doing!

Jay

Did i hear V12 and 20" rims??

Colin is a good guy, dad has known him from way back, uses us very often for customers with a 'lighter wallet' and for his personal vehicles...
Some of our customers that we have reffered to him, have come back telling us he is a 'perfectionist' which can never be a bad thing.

Just this morning i was helping someone with that same damn vacuum pipe!! Had been left off his auto...running like a bag of custard...

All the best for the coupe...hope it lasts another fair few miles yet!! :bannana:

Hi Mate - sorry to hear of your woes

Heres one for you to consider though - boss had his H/G done on the SL (oil in coolant)- and it appeared to have gone again 3 weeks later

I had a look for him - and it wasnt h/g at all!

Turns out it was the radiator porous between the Coolant rad and the auto gearbox cooler.

Might be worth checking that too!

Oil in water

Mine has gone too. Straight 6 twin-cam.
I've been quoted £455.50p by Waterhouse in Braintree, Essex.
Apparently the book time for this is 4.5 hrs, but it always takes longer.

PS Could oil get into the water any other way apart from a blown gasket ?
Is there an oil cooler inside the water radiator that could have leaked ?

Patrick, you have a PM. :D

aaw - hope it's not as bad as it might sound. If yu have Mr W on the job then you'll get pretty soubd advice - fingers crossed ;)

My 300CE24 heads gone too. Just an oil leak so far, but an £850 one. I'm told that the modified head gasket will mean that it will never have to be done again. Anyone on their 3rd gasket yet?

I have had plenty of 4 figure quotes, but I have opted for the £850 one from Merc specialists Swifts in Grimsby. At the same time I'm getting the rear diff seals done. Should I replace all the seals, or just the leaking ones? I would be a bit miffed if another one should go just after putting ther diff back.

Any thoughts?

Peter

Peter, if they are doing the dif seals i would go for all of them, save yourself grief later.

The garage discovered extra work was required:-
Top rad hose was about to split. Also replaced thermostat.
Ignition wiring loom insulation was cracking and falling off.
Total bill £730+
Finally got my car back yesterday, drove home, seemed to be running a little warmer than usual.
Got out of car and immediately noticed a scratch (and purple paint) above the rear door handle that wasn't there when the car went in. Phoned the garage to inform them on this, they claim they are always very careful with customer vehicles. But they person I had been dealing with didn't work Saturdays.

We were going to visit family in the afternoon, in Caterham, 66 miles away.
For some reason I decided to raise the bonnet had check the fluid levels.
Water level OK, oil level BELOW MINIMUM

By this time 12:50, the garage had closed.
Monday morning they will get a rocket.

I'm sorry to be so critical, but that type of service is not good enough. Can you recall a purple coloured car at their workshop? How fortunate you checked the oil level. The engine should have been tested once it was put back together and the oil level rechecked.

Not only that John, but the engine was run up and the cooling system flushed 3 times to clear out the oil from the cooling system.
I'm a bit puzzled as to why the low oil warning light didn't come on as the oil isn't up to the top of the red plastic bit on the dip-stick.

Full bill as follows:-
Description..............................................Quantity....................Total
Oil............................................................ 6.5 .................... 29.25
Labour.........................................................6.5.................. 331.50
Check for oil contamination in coolant. Remove cyl head
and check for distortion- OK.
Renew cyl head gasket and rebuild. Remove radiator and
flush out. Refit radiator and run engine up flushing cooling
system 3 times.
Replenish antifreeze. Re-wire ignition coils.
