Possibly a dodgy brake light switch.

Start the car , turn the steering wheel lock to lock twice , this can reset it.

It's probably a faulty brake light switch as Howard mentions. Costs £12 and takes ten minutes to fit. You can easily fit this yourself.

Thanks Will, I think your right as brake lights not working, I've the cover as best I can, where is the switch?

The switch is just above the brake pedal itself. Remove the plastic trim panel where your legs/knees sit and you should be able to see it. It removes with a quarter turn and there's one plug to undo.

Try sticking a sharp pointed instrument down the small hole above the P,R,D,R,N apertures, whilst trying to move the gear knob......it worked for me.There is a reference to this in the Handbook.
Good luck.
