My CLK320 has an occasional fault where the ABS, ESP & Brake Assist warning lights come on. It's always all three at once, followed by the message '3 malfunctions, visit workshop'. If I switch the engine off, it has always reset and then been ok. It has only done this 6 or so times in the year I have owned the car, until last weekend, when it kept doing it over and over. I had washed the car earlier in the day, and hadn't moved it since. Then when I used the car, as soon as I pressed the brake pedal, it showed the fault. I used the car several times that evening, and every time I pressed the brake pedal, the fault re-appeared. However, it has been fine since. I've done a search on here, and am thinking it's either the brake switch on the pedal, or maybe a damaged ABS sensor wire which was shorted out by the wet. Any ideas chaps?

Thanks for any info. :)

Cheapest and most common cause is the brake light switch, costs around £10 and 15mins to fit. If the fault appears when the brake is pressed whilst stationary its almost certainly the switch.

I agree, certainly has happened to me on my previous E280.

Thanks chaps, it did happen when stationery as well as on the move. I just need to get a switch now, I'm assuming eurocarparts do them, I'll take a look later.

Oh, off topic, love your CLS Brian.

LeighW - Wouldnt bother with europarts. A genuine one from MB is about £17. I got one about 2 months ago .....

Also if you want to make sure, I wrote up how to test a failed switch. Have a quick search ... post back if you cant find it .....

If you get it diagnosed - you will probably find the steering angle sensor has had a wobble - this was what mine was for similar faults - seems to occur during "sporting" driving .

LeighW I would be interested to hear if a new switch fixed this problem as mine has started showing the same symptoms.

Cheers, Peter.

i have the same problem withe my clk but my lights come on as soon as the engine starts first bas then esp then abs and show as multiple faults could this still be the brake switch?

Yes it normally is always the brake light switch, the cost is £9 and only takes ½ hour to fit, its held on with a 17mm nut.
What happens is the an internal leak in the switch kills the signal from the SAM.

fitted new brake switch and cured the problem.one thing i did notice this morning before fitting the switch is if i started the car with my foot on the brake the lights didnt come on untill i let the brake off,but if i started the car without foot on brake the lights came on straight away, pointing me towards the brake switch being at fault.i dont know wether this could be a reference for people with the same problem,or just coincidence

Dear Fred
Will this show up on the computer or do you have to tell them ('the garage') about it? My C230K seems to have a problem with the BAS/ASR light but this only occurs intermittently - most noticeably when reversing out of parking spaces on full lock. The light never comes on straight away on starting. Sometimes happens in heavy traffic when touching the brakes on and off after a few minutes. Long motorway journeys no problems at all.
Hoping for your wisdom on this!
Les

I am only an amateur (like most of the dealers)

I can always get my BAS/ASR/ESP lights to come on after hammering down the M1 to staples corner , where there is a stiff LH band , diving down , strange steering angle , hard braking , and I have no doubt that the lateral acceleration sensors give a very strange signal .

Upon diagnostic test "implausable steering angle sensor reading " was a stored code - - but since this only happens in odd situations ( only the M1 coming in to land) I would suggest that even if I change it (steering angle sensor) , that this may not necessarily get rid of the problem .

Since this fault can always be cleared down on the ignition switch , I would tend to leave it until it becomes a too regular for comfort experience - Steering angle sensor was around £150 , with and £100 labour if I recall .

May be worth while you changing the brakelight switch - easy job and can't do any harm .

Does anyone know the part number of the brake switch for a W210?

As I have an import the dealers always seem to have problems finding part numbers.

Was it the brake light switch then?

My wife has jsut called in reporting this fault ABS/ESP/BAS [for the first time] with '3 malfunctions - VISIT WORKSHOP'. She restarted and pressed the brake pedal, and the fault did not recur, but she has not tested it while driving.

Where is the switch located? Could there be a loose connection following my recent goodwill tailgate rust repair?

It was the switch on mine. It's located above the brake pedal, simple 15 minute job. :)
