ABS sensor wire. Whats it made of ?

I wanted to cut the wires to the abs sensors on my front wheels and then pull the cable through from the body and reattach it to see if an intermittant problem goes away. So i wonder does anybody know if its a normal sort of wire that i can just add in a piece of standard wire ?:dk:

Hi
the ABS sensor wire on the diff in my W124 was co-axial , not just ordinary stuff
cheers

Not like TV coax lol...it's for passing signals not power i.e really fine. Could be spliced I suppose, but it would probably mess up the signal?
I replaced the whole sensor when mine got snapped, £20 or so (s/h).
cheers

Perhaps its like HT leads cable ? Isnt that something like that, i think a roll of something like that is knocking about someplace in my moms house. Sensors i looked at seem quite expensive ( no money to spend either way ) so cutting it seems like a good idea. A guy recently said his was cut by previous owner and he rejoined it with some success, cant remember if it was the same as mine or not though. Thinking now it probably was the same as he said they put bigger wheels on the back and it caused a problem

Well I'd be careful about trying it (don't be too surprised if it ends up costing you a sensor), but you might be successful, whatever it is I think it unlikely that it couldn't be done. I could be wrong though.
Assuming you do try it, please post your results (either way) on here, I'd quite like to know what they're like as I've never cut one.

Hi there, the cable is most likely like this (see web link with picture), the interference supression is done using the 'twisted pair' woven overlap of the conductors, similar to telephone cables. I once had to join a crank position sensor and it was just as this configuration, not screened. A google images search on 'ABS sensor cable' seems to confirm this. I had no problems joining it, I soldered the joints and used self amalgamating tape to finish off. Quite a neat job, still working today some 4 years on.

The internet is an abomination...! You start to look for one thing, then see another... ....hours pass by.... Toast burned, Kids standing waiting at school, Missed setting the video recorder, you know the score...

Saw this on the subject of ABS cables.

This guy needs to know that although the cable looks 'routed correctly' when the car is jacked up, a large bend at a rate of knots with lowered suspension (that he is likley to have) will compress his suspension leg which more than likley caused the sensor wire to 'loop' outward between its captive ends and catch on the rim...

Anyway on a slightly more factual note, here is a picture of a cut/split ABS cable.

Must get on.... blasted internet.....

It looks simple enough then. I'll probably use shrink tube and solder since i don't have the tape.

That last post there seems a bit silly. I mean to think someone would get under a car behind the wheel and half cut the sensor wires ?? thats just crazy talk.

The reason i ask about this also is because last week i tried to repair a pair of earphones. when i stripped the rubber of the wires the copper inside is wrapped in soe kind of stuff which means it doesn't need rubber insulation on each wire. The difficulty then is that it wont solder ! Pain in the neck that is.

Bedwards i will post results but be warned it may be some time before i get the time to attack it.

Basically looks like a fairly straight and normal cable with 2 or three wires in it. Made of copper with some auld plastiky wrapper. From that info it looks like it's just fancy stuff but regular enough. I might have a go when the kids get holidays.

I wondered too if anyone relpaced a sensor on a vito ? because i followed the wire all the way into the loom up inside the engine bay and there are no signs of any plug or anything so i assume it has to be cut to join it in

Well i replaced my two front tires. While the car was jacked up in the garage i rotated the abs cable 180 degrees where it flexes behind the wheels. When i drove down the road the ASR hasn't cut in since. I guess 6mths wear on one tire was enough to imbalance the wheel size. Anyway best result !:thumb:
