Hi there, I'm a new proud owner of a 1999 W208 CLK 320 Elegance.

I've been driving the car now for a couple of days and have found it very enjoyable. I find it very smooth and enjoy the comfortability of the car.

Unfortunatly, I came across a problem with the car yesterday. I started the car and noticed the idle seemed very rough. The car felt like it was shivering from side to side.

When i tried to drive it the car would go no more than 20mph(was a struggle to even get to 20mph) and could not reach above 3500revs.

I decided to park the car and switch off the engine. Waited a few moments the started the engine back up again. Everything seemed fine and back to normal.
However, when i drive the car now i noticed that i have to gradually pick up speed.

I can feel a difference between light throttle and medium throttle but when I put my foot down the car seems to rev and the speed will stay the same. As if the clutch was slipping.

When stationary I tried revving the car and noticed the revs would go no higher than 4000 and the car would shake side to side as if it was redlining.

Can anyone please tell me if this is normal characteristics of a clk or is there something seriously wrong with my car?

Sorry for such a long first post.

Thanks in advance
Thanh

From Euro car parts.

Thanks for the advice, Most be such a common fault for you guys to be finishing each others sentences. lol

Will let you know how I get on.

get a new air filter element at the same time and check that pipework associated with the MAS is clean and free from any contaminant such as oil. If for some reason the filter has been changed to a non standard "sports" one like K and N remove it and use the standard MB filter. Oiled sports filters have been known known to contaminate MAS units

Went to Eurocarparts today, asked if I could buy the insert and they told me they only stock the whole MAS unit. Ended up costing me £193.11.

Fitting was only a 5minute job and I can feel the difference. The car feels more responsive and when on heavy acceleration the car revs over 4000.

Only thing is though, when the car is on idle and I rev the engine it still doesn't go over 4000 revs. Is this a saftey feature for the engine or is there still something wrong.

is this in neutral ? if so on auto then i think it is?

They are supposed to do that in park/neutral - if it revs above that in D it is fine.

Ill second that, yes in D it will only revv upto 4000 revs

Did you haggle over the price of the air mas? ECP always quote the upper price of their parts. As a rule alway ask if that is their "best price". I deal with them alot and they quote me a price and I find myself haggling down. In my experience most people in the motor trade love a deal. Offer them somthing in return for the "best price". If you have some skills to offer the salesman in return for the lowest cost i bet he will take it up.

Because I am going to buy some workshop eqipment from them they give me maximum discount. E.G. Water pump 104 engine. MB price £135+vat. ECP price £40 Inc.

If any of you need parts let me know as my girlfriend works at MB parts dept and can get me a great deal on bits.

The usual discount for most is 10%. I can usually get 15%-20% discount. I met her when I worked for MB. She is brilliant and knows her cars. To find a Lady that understands my passion for cars is very unusual.

Anyway I am waffling.

A rare breed - she understands your passion for cars, and let's you go and get bladdered with the boys. Look after that one... ;)
