Advice needed

In case you haven't seen it heres a previous auction with a much more detailed description from a different seller. Apparently these are worth just under £5300

Hope this helps,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Thank you very much for the link, the telescope you found is actually the next model up in the range. The one I am interested in is actually the 10" model which is about £2000 cheaper.

I had completely wrote this person off because of the reply, but now he has sent pictures of the complete unit still in the various boxes, so perhaps I struck a raw nerve. I am still not convinced about this but the pictures are clearly a plus mark.

so........

John

Just noticed the Tyne and Wear link, hardly the North of Scotland!!! Thanks very much for that

John, I have a lot of dealings on ebay and I would never respond like that. Remember, he is trying to sell, would you expect any sales person to talk like that. I really would not go there mate. Just my opinion, If you go for it then I hope all goes well and you get a total bargain.
Mark

I'd buy it but would make it quite clear that I (or one of my agents) would only be willing to pay cash once both sides were satisfied.

It's a bad advert but the guy may be genuine ( I say may here as it's almost impossible to tell on eBAy).

Get a landline phone number from the seller and make sure it ties in with one of the areas he supposedly lives in and then proceed with caution

Andy

John - his response to your not unreasonable request says it all to me. If he were genuine he would understand your concerns. I'd be inclined to send it onto Ebay themselves to have a look at - it's hardly what tradng on Ebay is supposed to be about.

You're better off out of it chuck.

Hope you find another one of these babies soon for your lovely lady ;)

if its anywhere near edinburgh then i could go and pick it up for you if required....

pm me if its near edinburgh....

EDIT: just read his reply to your email - probably best avoided!, but if u still want to check it out and i'm near then i wouldnt mind checking it out for you b4 u bid etc.

The only thing I can add to the sensible posts above is that it seems one of these is almost four grand new, without the extras.

This one is brand new, and yet he started the bidding at £850 (?)

It also seems there's no reserve, or it's reached it.

No wonder the seller's got 'financial problems', he must have lost at least £3,000 on it in four weeks

I have sent you a pm. Thanks very much.

This person does not give the appearance of being the politest person on the block.

It was lucky I noticed his laguage had not been picked up by the software that censors our posts??? ;) Otherwise you would have read the un *** version.

Regards,
John

Edit:

Well someone has made up everyone's mind. The bidding has now exceeded twice the value of the telescope??

Thank you everyone for all the constructive advice,
Regards,
John

Here we go again

I wonder if telescope buyers are viewed as a soft touch?

I took everyone's advice on the previous telescope and also learnt a lot. Since then there has been a number of different telescopes for sale. The seller always goes very quiet when I say I will collect the item and hand over the cash.

I just wish these folks could be caught. This is the very latest advert.

Telescope for sale

Do we think this is another scammer?

Thanks again for all the very helpful advice,
John

I have already reported this post

John - did you hear the news story on Friday of the 3 rumanians sent to jail for ebay scamming? These are tactics they used along with payment by Western Union.

Genuine ebayers have no need to operate outside of Ebay, other than to avoid their charges of course, but they do at least gov e the buyers and sellers some security. ;)

Hi Pammy,
Yes, thanks for pointing it out, we read that and laughed. I just get annoyed the E-bay allows this. The advert is CLEARLY (In great big bold type) in breach of their own code of practice?

I tried to follow your link but ebay have removed it. Did you find out if the guy was a scammer or did you buy the item?

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the concern, and because of the excellent advice the first time round I have become more educated with the goings on of Ebay.

I never purchased it and complained to Ebay.

Regards,
John

Edit:

Just checked and it is still there!

Now it has been removed

Since getting street wise to the low lifes that frequent E-bay I have found it fairly easy to spot dodgy dealers.

The thing that annoys me is the total lack of interest shown by E-bay over the types of criminals they allow to make a fortune out of their users.

I am a complete novice at using E-bay and wanted to buy a second hand telescope for my better half.

Now here is an item allegedly for sale in the US note the picture and of course the colour of the carpet US picture now we go to China!! China

E-bay are completely 100% not interested.

Here is another one that again is 'dodgy' The seller will even allegedly post it to the UK Dodgy Deal

Not car related, but thanks to you lot I have become street wise. If anyone finds a legitimate telescope please let me know. It has to be an LX 200 with a minimum size of 10" diameter.

Kind regards to all you helpful folks,
John

A big THANK YOU to everyone that helped educate me in the art of spotting the low life's that frequent E-bay

After six attempts at buying a top of the range telescope, I have finally bought a very nice one for 'she that must be obeyed'

An excellent seller that met us half way, and was extremely helpful.

Poor wife now has to wait until Christmas before 'opening' her present! ;) (Yes I we checked it was a telescope)

Thanks again everyone for all your constructive advice.

John

Very glad to hear it all went well John. There are many good decent sellers amongst the low life scum on ebay. I hope your wife will love the present.

BTW did you check that it definitely wasn't a 'picture' of a telescope or even a telescope e-book? :D

:D :D He gave me his name, address and telephone number (I checked his name via directory enquiries)

He drove down from Bristol to Taunton Deane and then helped my son load the telescope into our vehicle. :) It weighs 73Ib and the tripod 50lb. He showed us the equipment and even offered to demonstrate it.

Thanks to everyone here I have been able to spot the pay through Ebay, or Western Union scams. I just checked another auction for a similar telescope and sure enough it is a scam. Bidders are instructed to contact the seller through his yahoo e-mail address to get a buy it now price???

I get annoyed that E-bay allow these adverts when they are clearly in breach of their code of conduct, but when you complain they are not that interested :o

Direct copy of today's Ebay advert:

*****Contact me directly at [email protected] before bidding because we must speak about payment, shipping (your location) and my reserve price. If not, your bid will not be allowed and/or will be canceled. Thank you for understanding********

Regards,
John

Excellent news John, delighted for you. Patience is a virtue - pity I don't have any :( :D

Do any women? Ah yes when buying shoes and borrowing a credit card
