My battery has given up. It;s the stock 017 type, and is branded MB, and made by Varta.

Should I just get a stock replacement or can anyone recommend a "better" battery. At the moment I am using an emergency-purchased "Hugel" which is 12V 88Ah, the only one available as they have *no* other available MB batteries even in Dublin of this type, so it will need to come from Germany. The stock is 12V 100Ah.

So, can anyone advise me on replacements, in the sense of, either get the stock replacement or is there a new cooler, better, stronger battery I should get. I am having no problems with the Hugel, but at 88Ah, I wouldn't want to risk a couple of non-starts cracking as it would empty out quite quickly.

EDIT: cost is not an issue

I wouldn't worry about the 88Ah battery but would go for the OEM/Varta again next time.

Banner are also OE to MB nothing wrong with Exide, Bosch,Lucas

Just bought a genuine battery from MB (100ah) for a little over £100. I was quoted £120 for the Bosch Silver equivalent. Judging by the labels, it was made just a few weeks ago.

The MB battery is not the no-maintenance type, but then again my last Bosch Silver caused electrical problems after a mere 4 years.

Batteries come with 1,2,3,4 year guarantees, these things can fail, no matter who makes them, that why they have the guarantees and will always be replaced should they fail. From many threads it would seam that 4 years plus a bit, is the max life on our cars that never go to sleep.

MB commercial dealers sell them the cheapest and Cosco

I wonder if VW still offer a lifetime guarantee for their batteries? It was a little restricted though - same owner, same car, or else the guarantee was voided.

So the obvious question is.....who made 'em? :D

I need a battery for my C220 saloon (2001). Do you know if this is the same part number that I need? Would it be the same battery for the C220 Coupe as for the C220 saloon.

I looked on the MercedesBenzparts website but it's not very helpful as no details are given for the products - just part numbers! I know my current battery is 100Ah and I think around 750 or 800 cold cranking. The Varta website recommends a battery which is 100Ah and 800 CCA. They also suggest a different (presumably more powerful) battery if you have automatic (which I do). Why would you need more power to start an automatic?

Hope someone can help clarify these part numbers as the MB parts website looks as though it would be good value.

Welcome to the forum, I cant answer all of the part number questions, but do remember that a partly charged big battery is not as efficient as a fully charged normal one.

Re the Auto bit, the only thing that I can think of is the you cant push start an auto

I'm not sure why you need to buy a battery from the Dealers - your local Halfords will have the equivalent battery with the same guarantee for about half the price. Ask them for trade discount and if they give you a trade card (dead easy to get, at most all you need is a letterhead) then the price halves again :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I followed this up and phoned my local Halfords and they say their price for a battery for a C220 is £99.99 (I expect they thought I wouldn't notice that's actually about £100!). This is for 95 Ah and 800 CCA.

So this is actually £20 more than the 100Ah one mentioned above from MercedesBenzparts. My local Mercedes dealer quoted £110 and also said MobiloLife might be able to come and fit it under the breakdown service, so that would probably be the second best option.

I'll try phoning MBparts again tomorrow (yesterday there was only an answering machine) to check which part number I need. The fact that Halfords didn't ask which C220 I had (saloon or coupe) suggests they use the same battery so the MBparts one looks the best option. But if anyone can help with a part number before I phone them that would be a great help.

Well, I got through to MBparts today but they said they don't deliver batteries. I could pick one up but that wasn't any good for me. Over the phone they quoted £109.99 for the battery I need.

So, as suggested by my local dealer, I tried MobiloLife. And after confirming that the car's service record qualifies for breakdown assistance, they came out and fitted a new battery for £96, with no charge for fitting. So that worked out to be the most convenient, as well as reasonable value.

Later MBparts sent me an email (in reply to one I sent on Saturday when I couldn't get through on the phone) suggesting I could look up part numbers on www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb.asp Normally, I would be a little cautious about Russian websites (.ru) but this seems to be a very comprehensive website listing Mercedes part numbers.

Drilling down to the C220 battery it lists three 100Mh batteries, including A0055412101 (thanks 230K) with the footnote that it's for the UK, Spain, Italy and Japan markets (ie presumably temperate climates) and for out of warranty and goodwill replacements. The battery MobiloLife supplied was A0055412501, also for out of warranty and goodwill replacements. But MBparts charges around £98 plus VAT. So the MobiloLife replacement including VAT looks an even better deal. Thanks for all the help. Hope the parts website is of use to someone.
