Advice wanted from W251 R Class / X164 GL owners

They made an R63.......

I hope my Wife never finds one of those during her frequent searches...

Having a petrolhead Wife is great, but there's never any balance as to why you shouldn't buy and it can get very expensive! So many options, not enough money.

Have only seen one used example of a R63 for sale and it was a bargain at £17k if you ask me.

They must be extremely rare.

By way of updating this thread, I've put down a deposit on my next car...

I looked at loads of GLs most of which were massively overpriced or very rough around the edges. So, unfortunatley it's not a GL, or an R class. Although I did have my eye on this - it was a strong contender! Used Mercedes-benz Gl Class 4x4 Gl420 Cdi 5dr Tip Auto in Chester Le Street, County Durham | Joe Ludd Specialist Cars Ltd

In fact I'm afraid my next motor isn't a Merc but more on that later, we do still have the W203 though so won't be going anywhere!

I haven't event collected the new (to me) car and I'm already thinking that a CLS Sportbrake or X166 GL could be the next motor in 3 to 4 years :)

We went down the R-class route and absolutely love it. I might even get around to some photo's and a thread when the weather improves...

A bit of a thread revival, but I can't find much else here about the W251 R Class.

I think I have outgrown my E500 S211, albeit temporarily, so I am picking up a 2007 R320L CD1 Sport Edition (with lots of AMG badges and exhaust tips??!) on Sunday. 67k on the clock, fsh, with recent rear air springs and compressor, and a new gearbox control module.

I'm curious about the possibility of Brabus chipping, and don't know if their chips are model or engine specific, as their site shows most models bar the R class. Also whether or not it's a simple job to swap the middle row from two to three seats? Anyone else here care to share their ownership experience?

They must be less popular than I thought!

Congratulations on your new car. I think they're underrated and more relevant today than when they were launched. I look forward to seeing some photos.

The D6 chips are labelled as model specific. Try sending an email to Markus Paus at Brabus dot com he's a top guy and should be able to tell you if a D6 chip intended for a different model will work on your R-class.

Thank you, Bobby. I'm just about to get the train to view the car for the first time, and hopefully drive it away, so fingers crossed. The ad, owner and pics all look good.

As for pics, I'll get some up asap, but here's one in the meantime. It wasn't you on the Thames, was it?!

The lad in the green top and red life jacket looks like he's about to have a much better time than the lad in the yellow life jacket!!

Does that mean the E500 is for sale - I could be interested!!

Hi Antimony, possibly, but I need to see how I get on with the R class first, which I really only need for a few months. I've had the E for 6 years, and love it to bits, so it will be a wrench to part with, but if the R class wins my heart in preference, then I'll let you know. You don't have full members rights yet, so I can't pm you or vice versa unless you are around for while and you build up 30 posts.

In the meantime, here's the new beastie, hopefully still where I left it at my hotel car park last night!

Handsome thing, that! Unusual wheels too, not seen those before, I don't think?

20" AMGs. It also comes with AMG seat belt sleeves, AMG badged interior aluminium trim. AMG tail pipes and an AMG badge on the tailgate for good measure, all in what is an R320L CDI Sport Edition, I believe. I feel a bit of de-badging coming on!

Is it Lazurite Blue? They look great in that colour. We came so close to buying one a few years ago, it was lovely with Alpaca grey interior.

It is lazurite blue, but it looks mostly silver in the light that I've seen it in so far. A few interior pics from the ad (dog guard now in its bag, with no evidence of a dog as ever s-l1600 (9).jpg being a passenger), and spot the AMG badge even on the steering wheel!* The car has certainly been well cared for, although I have discovered a few things that need looking at, namely rear parking sensors and the embedded steering wheel gear change buttons, which don't seem to function. *Is the steering wheel a genuine option, or would this have been fitted after market with no connectable gear change function? I don't know how else to make any manual gear change at the moment, but I've not had time to read the manual or get to know the car yet, and I'm very much looking forward to learning all about it. I'll be interested to see mpg figures at the first brim refill later today.

I've had a quick glimpse at tge owners handbook now and have sussed out the steering wheel gear shift buttons, which work as they should.
