Airmatic problem

Hi. I have a late 2004 270 CDI Estate with airmatic, 125 k miles, owned from new.

Since the recent bout of cold weather the car has developed a pronounced wallowing affect. There is also a clatter at the rear when riding bumps / shallow pot holes etc. (This sound happened from new but now seems much more prevalent.)

Some quite modest bumps seem to upset the car unduly. It's not it's previous poised and predictable self!

The issue is no better or worse with or without load in back.

The vehicle rises and lowers as normal when changing settings or selecting 'raise vehicle'. It has not dropped on any corner. It doesn't settle if left for days.

Approx 3 weeks ago there was a pronounced smell of oil at rear of car - similar to diesel but not.

Following day noticed black stain on drive with trail, but both seemed in wrong position for car and I wondered if perhaps van had turned around in drive and not related to car. Still think this. Almost certainly accounted for smell.

This was since wallowing had started though, so wondered about shocks. Have taken driver's rear wheel off to check. Shock dirty (road dirt), but no sign of oil there or on rest of suspension or inside wheel rim / wheel arch. Gaiter at top of shock is just starting to perish though.

'Bouncing' the car to check the shock appears to indicate this is OK. Odd thing though is that I am sure that previously the suspension was pretty rigid when engine turned off, now seems soft. I maybe wrong on this though.

To drive, the car feels as though the air springs have been set really soft. But the dynamics of the car are changed by the airmatic button, so system is functional in some way.

There have been no dash warnings or messages.

I keep trying to persuade myself I'm being paranoid, but having driven the car for 125k miles I know something is wrong!

Could it be a sensor? Would this be logged on STAR if there are no dash warnings? Any other way to check shocks?

To the best of my knowledge no airmatic parts have been replaced since new.

Any help / advice / comments welcome. Thanks.

How's your tyre treads ?

Sorry should also have said, this is a W211 E Estate.

Also by 'wallowing' I mean a sort of long frequency bounce! Feels a little like it would on comfort with heavy load in back...but much less controlled!

Are there any sensors that 'set' the damping rate?

Any thoughts welcome. Thank you!

The rear shocks may need replacing , even when a shock is not leaking it can still be worn and loose gas presure . My 211 has airmatic and had both rear shocks replaced at 80000 miles . There expensive too for the airmatic cars due to the adaptive damping . I think mine where over 800 euro for the pair including fitting.

Thanks Shorty. It certainly feels like the shocks...just hoping it might be something cheaper!

I have the car booked into local dealer for daig, so we will see. Just worried I'll end up repacing shocks and then find its a sensor.

Thanks for the comments anyway.

For anyone interested the dealer says 2 rear shocks:(.

You were quite correct Shorty!

Quoted £1,006 inc VAT to supply and fit (ouch!). Still... 125k miles of pleasure probably be worth it!

Just got to save the pennies now as we have just shelled out for an new alternator on our other similar aged W211 saloon.

Anyone any ideas where these shocks can be purchased cheaper than main dealer? Eurocarparts seem to stock standard shocks but not airmatic.

Airmatic struts are difficult to locate.

At least you don't need the ones that I did, £1k each side -fitted!

It's not much but as your car is over six years you get a 10% (?) discount on parts and 40% discount on labour at official MB dealerships (well, that's what MB Guildford offer, anyway). That should help a bit.

Thanks. Unfortunately (or fortunately perhaps?) the figure includes these discounts:( (unless anyone thinks otherwise?)

Same dealer (MB Salisbury - always been v good) has serviced since new, so no reason to doubt them.

Done some searching on line for part nos they provided but no joy.

Just caught this. I had a 1997 W210 etate which occasionally would leap and become a bit unstable. It was some bushes associated with the rear suspension that needed replacing, can't remember exactly as it was 5 years ago. Unless you are carrying heavy loads, I wouldn't have thought the shocks would be suspect, especially the rears. My estate had self levelling rear suspension, air driven I presume and I did well past the sort of mileage your car is on.
