Well,

Took the car to the MB Dealership,re.the misting up and foul smell (see my previous posts on this thread) - it appears that the a/c drain pipes are not blocked at all,but that they suspect the evaporator/receiver dryer. They want the car in and it is a very big job,as the evaporator is sited behind the dash.Fortunately for me all this is covered under the MB Tier 1 warranty, unlike the a/c compressor and I think I would be looking at the stiff end of £1500,or more otherwise - any estimates ? - I will keep you all informed of the work,I know I must check that they also replace the receiver dryer and replace the vacuum flap actuators and be sure to vacuum purge the system of air and moisture, before re-pressurising and r-gassing - is there anything I have missed ? - I have to say,I was mighty relieved that I have the Tier 1 warranty and on the basis of this repair alone, may now consider renewal next year, when it runs out - this has easily got to be £1500 of work.

Thanks
Alex

This seems odd - I can't imagine why the a/c compressor wouldn't be covered, yet I can easily imagine why the receiver/dryer wouldn't be covered (as it doesn't normally "fail" as such, rather just ceases to work efficiently).

Anyway, if they're going to cover the cost, just keep quiet and let them get on with it.

Hi Rory,

Yes you are right - Tier 2 warranty, which is less comprehensive than Tier 1,clearly states that the air conditioning compressor is covered,so I am certain it will be likewise, under the more comprehensive Tier 1 cover,I will clarify more before the car is handed over, but the Service Manager, was adamant that the scheduled work will be definitely covered under warranty - lets put it this way,I will not be handed the car over otherwise !

Like I said earlier, if the dealer says it's covered then let them get on with it. If you press too hard you might find you argue yourself into being liable for some of the cost.

I had it up on the ramp yesterday but forgot my camera! but the drains are right at the top of the trans tunnel one each side oval shaped and no anti dust valves so nothing to block up like my old landrover.

Impossible to reach on the flat but reachable with a trolley jack and an axle stand as you have to get right under the car.

Well Lynall,Rory and all,

Picked up the car from the MB Dealership, whereby they replaced the heaterbox/receiver drier - the bit that removes moisture in the aircon system. Was replaced and immediately I put the fan on,all seemed okay.Previously, irrespective of the weather and temperature conditions, immediately I turned the fan on,with,or without constant aircon use,The window would fog up badly, within seconds and take a few minutes to clear.Interestingly, the dealership were happy to claim for this under the manufacturers warranty,as the car is under three years old. Here is a question for members though and forgive my naivety here,I have arranged to bring the car in for a 'end of warranty' check - they are happy to do this,as as the true manufacturers warranty runs out in a few days - however,as the car was brought through MB Approved Used, there is Tier 1 warranty extended until June 2009,provided by the dealership. When I suggested that there was no rush,to do the end of warranty inspection,as I am covered until 2009 - they seemed particularly keen to do it,before the manufacturers warranty runs out - car was registered on 10th Oct 2005 - you see. This begs the question - just what is the Dealerships commitment to the balance of the Tier Warranty offered when they sold me the car.Why were they more anxious to do the work under the manufacturers warranty - rather than when it passes beyond that date and on to the balance of the Tier One warranty, offer by them - this sounds like you are indeed offered two 'tiers' of comittment to me - and I thought that the dealership would provide equal commitment right the way through - clearly something is going on here.I had considered extending the warranty after June 2009,as I have had a couple of jobs done that would have paid for the warranty cover and it almost justifies renewal - but having seen this 'two tier' approach to dealing with warranty claims etc - I am not so sure now - your thought would be greatly appreciated.
