Bailing out of here now, but some useful feedback and discussion that helped my decision so thanks everyone and hope you enjoy your cars :)

Going to be going a bit left field after originally choosing to stay with an R and maybe being tempted to the A35 AMG but heart as won over the head and I am in process of ordering a VW Golf TCR Pure Grey with the Reifiniz 19" wheels, Adaptive Suspension and 90" Tints (pretty much everything else is standard)

Now made that decision quite excited to be moving from the heavy, planted and hugely capable to a more agile and lighter driving experience. Expect there to be some traction light ballet as look for grip but have had decent powered front wheel drive cars before and we have an A1 SLine Black Edition 185 BHP in the family which is likely a decent comparison to experience expecting but of course in a diluted way as the TCR packs 290 BHP

Had three itches to scratch, always wanted an Audi Quattro, an R32 and a GTI and having done the modern equivalents of the first two feel this TCR is the best GTI to scratch that itch, as really love the styling and when add in the heritage it was hard for me to resist and I have not and like said will be on order soon :)

Sorry to see you go but congrats on the new car order [emoji106]

I very nearly went the same way with similar spec plus pro nav, sunroof and DCC. Managed to negotiate a 10.5% discount on it and low rate finance nearly won me over but I didn’t fancy another 15k depreciation in 18 months. Hopefully the TCR holds better but I’m not so sure with unlimited production up until the Mk8 surfaces. The GFV was virtually the same as the GTI PP which with the A35 having a higher GFV despite the higher APR also (almost double) it’s only £60 a month difference.

My company lease is a strange one, standard spec and moderate engine options on fords, BMW Vauxhall and many of other marquee, all come out comparatively with the VW performance range, and where obviously with this range you are getting a significantly lot more than them vehicles, so the R and now for me the GTI TCR are an easy slam dunk decision.

So its slightly different for me, its simply on the list to select and my allowance covers the cost and where I do pay the BIK but I offset that with the trouble free motoring where everything is just covered. Again thats a little strange, my expected BIK is only £30-£40 more than some pretty standard and dull rides.

I like my cars though, always have, and have always happily spent some of my hard earned on a decent ride, as driving is a pleasure for me, not just a function.

So as not really count my allowance, the BIK payment is quite cheap for the car getting and the fully inclusive package that surrounds it, the most have to ever do is phone a number and whatever this issue is, is managed.

Have bought cars in manner you describe so understand what you mean in depreciation and you really have to carefully factor it or you are one wrong end of the deal at the end.

We have to do our diligence as you have by getting even close to a deal on another R, but there is a point you pull the trigger and back at you, hope you have many enjoyable miles in your new ride - now decided actually quite excited to get hold of the TCR as especially at the outset there will be few about, it looks great (love the rear end) compared to the standard GTI and R, and of course it does have its own performance credentials.

But gone on enough, so will leave you guys to it, though may pop back when get the TCR to see how you all getting on and give some early thoughts on the TCR and if got my decision right.

Ah gotcha yes a lot different buying that way hope it didn’t sound like I was dissing the TCR but wanted to share my rationale and also the deal I was offered.

Have you seen these prob shouldn’t post here LoL :-

Hope you enjoy it, I’ve looked at them and think they will be fantastic, also love the look.

I’ve currently got a very similar car underneath in the form of a Cupra 300, it’s a great car but I’m fully ready for 4WD now at the expense of maybe a bit of agility.

I was slightly put off too with the new Golf being just around the corner, either way it will still be a great car.

Had 2 x Quattro and the R so huge fan of the AWD but they are definitely lumps, just supremely planted and fast lumps, and though sure there be times will miss the AWD I do think scratching my heritage itch with this version is the right time for me to, as its likely the best GTI is going to be in style and performance (outside the more specialised clubsport)

Have had performance FWD and we run that A1 Sline Black Edition 185 BHP which is quite a lot of BHP for such a small car, and there is sometimes some scrabble, but it is playful as sure you understand with the Cupra, where as thats not a word would use for the R, its more fast and extremely assured and competent - No doubt the AWD will draw me back again but for now its just the time to go with heart for style and heritage without really sacrificing performance

In terms of the MK7 being near the end of its run, and MK 8 on the horizon, the MK 7 has really set the curve and much of what the MK 8 will bring is technology and more autonomous and gesture which quite happy to defer as long as can - the MK 8 drive cannot really be much improved and so the MK 7 remains more than relevant and its recent tests against the new A35 AMG and others it still stacks up completely.

We all car people, so its ok to look over the fence, we all respect each others final choices, and yes seen these, really do think making a good decision for me where I am with my history of cars.

Hi all, had my A35 for a couple of weeks now - not a great first impression of Mercedes tbh. Passengers airbag faulty after 150 miles. Been to dealers and they said the seat base sensor is wrong. Tried twice to order a new one - both times wrong part arrived - they have no idea what the correct part number is so still waiting for correct part while they get an answer from "parts technical"!
Anybody know if it is possible to permanently disable the annoying Lane Assist?
Also, anyone know what "Advanced" Dynamics does? Cheers all ;)

You cannot disable the lane or brake assist permanently, apparently as they are “safety systems”. The lane and brake assist have both nearly caused me to have an accident rather than preventing one, I am definitely to a fan of either.

Kind of interested in the dynamic thing myself, no idea what the advanced does.

Love this ....

I’d love a bit more explanation on the adaptive dampers.

Do they work in conjunction with the comfort/sport/sport plus drive modes or independently?

Or are they set to soft with comfort in comfort mode and sport in sport mode? With a combination only being available in individual mode?

Is there 2 or 3 setting with them?

Hope I’m making sense!

They’re three stage dampers. So you have a soft, medium and hard setting, which are matched to the comfort, sport and sport plus modes. You have a separate button for them so you can manually adjust them to whatever setting you want and you can also choose which setting you want them to be in for your individual mode

Okay cheers, I’ve specced them as I was surprised how stiff it was with the passive dampers, is the comfort mode noticeably softer than that?

Are Sport and Sport + mode configureable so when you select them it will automatically go into manual gears? Or does that always need to be done separately, or have it set up via the individual setting?

There was also a ‘driving dynamics’ I think, with an on and off - what’s that do!?

Sorry for what seem like daft questions, bit i’ve googled the **** out of this and looked on the App and can’t find any answer.

I opted for them and there’s a noticeable difference in comfort mode. I’d say the middle setting is like the standard set up
