While there's a couple of threads running about the E55 and E60 AMGs, it made me wonder about old AMGs vs. new Mercs in the AMG stable.

So let's take the legendary AMG Hammer and E63 AMG.

AMG Hammer.
385bhp
~420 lb/ft
0-62mph 5 secs
Vmax 185mph

E63 AMG
507bhp
465 lb/ft
0-62 mph 4.5 secs
Vmax 155mph (and guesses to destrestricted top end?)

Ok, so the E63 is alot faster in the 0-60 sprint, but which would be the best car to live with?
Which would you rather own?
A mid range acceleration battle would be pretty interesting!
Please add any additional thoughts you have on these models :)
Let's see where this thread goes! :D

I would personally go for the Hammer. W124s are still useable cars, and you have something a bit different to drive around in.

Hello,

As much as the AMG Hammer is an awesome car I would have to move with the times and anyway I would want the estate which you couldn't get as far as I am aware in the W124

So E63 Estate just like off top gear please, with the Hammer in the 4 car garage for fine days.

As for something different the E63 is pretty rare I would think :) and ok yes looks similar to a E200K but then so does a 200E and a 500E ? unless you know whats what......

Quad pipes on the back of the E63 and the little 6.3 badge is a slight give away :)

There was an E36 estate actually but there are something like 30 or less in the UK.

Hi Wallingd,

Yes an E36 was on ebay not that long ago in estate, but no Hammer...

This looks cool, with the 500E arches also

Those wheels spoil it ....

Not into that slammed 'Euro' look at all ...

Pipes should be square .... oval pipes on w124s look silly

Other than that , looks nice !!

I think it was ~5 w124 estates.

Id like the Hammer for the rarity but the e63 is probably a better car for daily use.

As others have said, it would be great to have a Hammer, but given the choice I'd have an E63.

I've been lucky enough to drive E63 (Est & Sal), CLS63, CLK63 (Cab) on road and track, and I have to say it really is an awesome engine, in an awesome car.

Dealer had a Black E63 Saloon with brown interior today

I'd love the Hammer...but an E63 in, if possible, a 'Green Black', or a Designo Jet Black non Metallic...so I could t-cut away all those stone dents and scratches while driving on the motorway...!

I guess I'm pretty fortunate that I see a lot of high end MB's dropping people and celebrities off and picking them up where I work; saw Samuel L Jackson yesterday with a young girl, he arrived to T4 in a 05 plated S320 CDI; Frank Bruno also flew yesterday, arriving in a 04'
plated ML500.

Most Celebs arrive in MB's anyway...good taste I guess!

Before you ask, I'm on VIP/Escort duty already...

Interesting that you even have to think about whether to have a brand new top-of-the-range car or its predecessor built in the 1980s.

(I'd have a 6 Ltr Hammer)

7 E36 estates were made......I know of one of them for sale at the moment if you want the phone number of the owner.

Its silver, 182,000 miles on the clock, black leather, goes like stink and is in very good condition, apart from a gearbox issue which results in 2nd gear hanging on for too long before it changes up. Could be something of nothing, but seller is prepared to sell car as is for £4k or once the gearbox has been looked at and resolved it will be sold for £7-8k

At worst a replacement box or rebuilt box will be £1-1.5k.

In terms of the Hammer/E65 debate......E65 would be the practical choice, but AMG Hammer would be the one to have in your collection. The Hammer you mention at 385bhp would be the 6.0 version, of which no right hand drive examples were made.

The only right hand drive Hammers were a 5.0 and a 5.6....the 5.6 was written off many years ago.

Total Hammer production of 5.0. 5.6 and 6.0 was approx 29 cars in total, of which the majority were Coupe's, and roughly 5 or 6 cars were Saloons.

Sale price of the last 6.0 Hammer Coupe made in 1990 was $161,000

Vlad, slightly off topic, but I saw your old silver 500E last night...and a few days back:

Groan.....not one of the best things I have done in my life, selling that car.

Would be interesting to slip a note under the windscreen to ask whether he would consider selling it

Yeah, will do next time I see it!

Kind Regards,
Bill
