Hey

Was wondering, has anyone ever bought AMG "Style" alloys off of ebay? Im always on the look out for a bargain, but cutting costs on tyres or wheels seems like russian roulette to me. Am I wrong?

Some of the ebay wheels are of poor quality and very heavy. Just be careful.

I think the general opinion will be no, not only because we all like OEM kit but also it is an unknown quality in an area thats very important, personally I wouldnt, I would just wait for a real set to turn up at the right price, there are lots of ebayers wanting silly money for wheels at the moment, I just got a set of wheels for the CLK (not sure of the style but like howards) people on ebay wanted £350-400ish, got a set from Dronsfields for £166 and a mate who owned me a favour refurbed them for nowt!!! I notice that W210 E55 rims are on there for about £200 a wheel, I sold all mine a year or so back for £400 freshly painted, so keep your eyes out for a bargin...

As you are probably aware, all Mercedes and AMG wheels are made by outside contractors. Belgium and Italy are favourite sources.
I have, in the distant past had some horrible aftermarket wheels seemingly made of chocolate with paint bursting to get off the rim.
However, there are now some very good 'copies' on the market, some even made in the same factories as 'real' Mercedes wheels and these are every bit as good as the OEM parts.
The problem is you really have to see and feel the weight of them first, not always easy if they are 200miles away on ebay.
I've just bought some 'real' wheels from ebay at about 30% dealer cost, so as advised, keep your eyes open but don't totally discout the 'style' wheels.

My AME ones seem to be ok quality, not exact copies, but look close if your not parked next to a car with real ones on, typically now they are on the car i have decided i dont like em as they look to modern for it!

Merc E430 New Wheels.JPGOther option is to search out some alternative Mercedes wheels ( not AMG necessarily) but they give the car a distinctive look all the same. I did this and got some from Chris Murray at Alloy Wheels Direct. I think the picture is attached (technology permitting!!)

Very nice

Yep quite happy with them , they actually say AMG not AME on them but i bought them as i liked the style of them i dont think they are copies of a genuine AMG wheel so not true "AMG Style"

I didnt pay AMG money for them and only bought them as a stop gap while I have my standard ones refurbed but i still havent got around to that

They look really good, they suit the car.

Mine are to big for the car i think, its quite a delicate shape despite its overall size so these 17"s make it look like its on stilts with wellies on the bottom, i want something smaller with some dish on for it, i'll flog mine in a month or two when people have some more money! lol

Can't you drop the hydraulics a bit to reduce the 'stilts' look ?

Its my other one thats on juice, this ones still on springs, i'm considering swopping them over onto this one but that will force me to have smaller wheels anyway as the bigguns wont squeeze as far up into the arch.

Those are copies of the w221 S-class AMG wheels. But they do suit the car well.

If you can find them, a German company called Intra did AMG copies which were pretty good, so much so that AMG took them to court and finally won and the court had all of the dies for making the alloys taken away and melted down.

I bought these AMG style babies off ebay from a private buyer a year and half ago complete with tyres for £399. Tyres are not the best of quality (but brand new) but there OK till I get better quality ones when they are worn out. The alloys are light and of very good quality with polished and a studded split rim look. The rears are wider that the fronts. I have the manufactures details if you would like to look them up?

Ebay worked for me and my advice is not to overlook it. Not a very clear picture of the wheels I know, but at least there's a good looking bloke to compensate! ;) Well, what you can see that is...

I would say that original alloys always look the best.
Saying that for a Mercedes i would only put on AMG, Carlsson, Lorinser, and original Mercedes alloys on my cars, of course that is my opinion.

After market alloys just dont look right, make the car look a little boy racer car to me.

Says the man who owned a C240 with a amg body kit ;):):):)

Ironically, genuine AMG wheels are described using the word "style".

For example AMG Style IV are the name of the 'proper' version of the wheel on that good looking blokes ;) :D silver W203 C-Class a few posts back.

So when buying, just because the ad mentions "style" don't assume they're copies without further checks.
