Thanks for your comments everybody. I went to see the car but wasnt taken with the colour, solid dark blue, and felt it was just a little scruffy all round, although the price was more than reasonable and reflected this. I also have a classic car so I like my car to be in good order and just would not feel comfortable with something that was a little too worn around the edges. I think I also have a preference for an E300TD as well, and when it comes to actually putting my money on the table... Hope to "join the club" in due course.
