I really didn't get on with the S-Class at all. I sorted a couple of niggles out, but it just wasn't to my taste. At all.
So..... I got rid and got myself a V220 CDi Ambiente Auto. Full leather, 7 Seater etc etc.
If I had been sensible in the first place, it is what I should have bought, but....
Never mind, all will be better in about 4 months time when I get the ML320 CDi:D

Makes sense to me... I would be unable to bond too well with a car with those niggles....

Thanks to this forum (Howard/ Nick Mercedes amongst others) I sorted the problems no bother.
The problems I had were-
1. I'm only 30, yet I felt like a 60 year old when driving it
2. Even though it was 197BHP as opposed to 204BHP in my E-Class, it might aswell have been 50 BHP difference, the way it wafted about.
3. I didn't realise how much the interior would offend me, but I, for whatever reason, just couldn't get on with it.:dk:

V Class? Those are hardly rocket ships either! hold their value well though.

The V class is more nippy round town, which is better for the missus... The W220 was fine on the motorway, it's just that it would only be there 10-20% of the time.

Quality ^^ :D

Funny thing was, I'd always fancied an S class but from the day I bought it I just didn't like it.....:dk: Very strange.
I'm also really really missing my old W211, which isn't helping...:o

I'm missing a huge petrol engine

Fixed it for you :thumb:

S Class needs 5 litres plus ideally.

I would agree with that statement in a big way.
The CDi engine in it, day to day, felt sluggish.
My friend has a W221 with the 350 CDi engine and I had a drive of it to compare and, taking into account the age difference, it was a lot better. Although it still felt more sluggish than my W211...:dk:

This is a very odd view of the S class -voted best saloon car in the world by numerous motoring journalists including What Car about 4 years in a row.

I had a 2005 S class with the straight 6 320 diesel and it was a wonderful car. About 7 seconds 0-62, yet a combined economy figure of 35 mpg. Wonderful car to drive, never feels as big as it is, lots of grunt, and munches the miles. Magic carpet ride, with no equal. I have had many E's over the years and like them a lot but the S class is something special.

The newer S class is hardly a tad quicker than the straight 6 was.

Maybe the OP's engine was not in full tune for some reason.

I think I'd be quite happy with a S class, if anyone wants to swap with an old W210 hehe When I got my e class I was a little worried it might be too much of an older persons car (I'm 32) but it feels just right. I guess I've done my small car thing,it's just nice to finish work and slump into something comfortable.

I drive a s320cdi and I wouldn't say it is sluggish. The low down torque means the car never struggles and always seems to be in the right gear.

Also the air suspension with the automatic damping makes it seem like a smaller car (doesn't dive when braking).

Are you sure there was not a fault with the engine (maf, egr, etc)

Maybe I'm comparing it too much to my old W211 :dk:
The E-Class seemed more responsive upto 50ish MPH, but above that the S was probably the better car
.
I had the Air mass meter and egr checked and they were both fine; my friend who works at Mercedes put it on the star machine and it was all clear...:dk:

Don't get me wrong- I think the W220 S-Class is a really good car (and I'm normally the first to stick up for most Mercedes) and what I have read about them it makes my experience seem a little strange, but it just wasn't for me I'm afraid. Which was a shame in all honesty :o

The funny thing about an S-Class is that it cossets you away from a lot of outside interference so you don't feel connected to it. Maybe it's that change that you hadn't adapted to.

Think of it as a mobile gentleman's club on wheels.
