Android / Google maps wiped all my timeline data

Hello all. Am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions?
Basically I got the warnings from Google that the maps timeline data was going to be saved on the device soon and not on Google servers from xx date and (thought) I had followed the instructions carefully.
I don't keep a holiday diary so liked this feature as I could look back about 10 years on the holiday locations I'd been to.
When I checked my timeline is was all gone. I switched it back on on 8 May but everything before seems to have been wiped.
Any ideas how to get it back????????????????

Was it gone on the homepage/via a PC, or gone on your actual device?

I quick search suggests its all retrievable via the actual device, just a case of re-uploading it again.

Via PC it says "Timeline is no longer available on web browsers. To view or change your Timeline settings, go to Activity controls."
When I go to Activity Controls it says my timeline has been on since 8 March 2025 - which is when I noticed it had been deleted and I switched the timeline back on (it was listed as off even though its been on for nigh on 10 years)
So I don't know how to retrieve the lost timeline ... I think it is truly lost, which is infuriating as I thought I'd followed the instructions. From a quick google it seems I'm not alone (slow hand clap for google shafting their customers ).

From what I can see you need to activate it once again from the device, then it will upload/sync to the PC version. have you tried this?

On Friday I had an email from Google advising there had been a 'technical issue' ... sure enough when I looked on my phone all timeline data prior to a couple of weeks ago had gone.

As below this is only recoverable if you had encrypted backups enabled (I didn't, but do now).

well that's a massive eff you from google!
Explains my issue.
Oh well, I suppose I should keep a basic diary instead

yes it just shows all dates pre 8 march as little crosses - and on the PC version it just says Timeline is no longer available on web browsers

Update: SOLVED!

Just in case anyone needs to do the same: go to timeline, backup, wait for the backups to appear (took a few seconds hence why I didn't notice them were there first time round), then click on one and click download. I now have all my data back.
