About a year ago my AC suddenly stopped working. I took it to a guy recommended by my loal indy and he checked it out and said there was zero gas in it. He refilled it and added lubricant/dye. He then ran it up, it got nice and cold and checked with a UV lamp and a sniffer type device for leaks. None were apparent. It all worked fine for about the next 10 months and now it has suddenly stopped working again and it seems the gas has gone as I cannot see the green dye in the inspection glass. I have had a good look round the obvious places including the know problem behind the fan hubs and can see no evidence of leaks. What I did notice when I changed the oil was the compressor was covered in the green dye. I'm not convinced that's the leak as the fill valve is very near it and maybe the guy 'spilt' some dye over it when filling. Any ideas chaps or do you know anyone good around the Chessington/Kingston area that will cure the problem (not just re-gas) and won't rip me off?

My bet is that the dye is telling you exactly what it should be telling you.

The dye would have been spotted with the UV gun at the time it was first filled surely?

I'm a bit too far north to offer recommendations in your area, but good luck with the repairs and I hope you are soon sorted!

UPDATE: New condenser, new dryer and new seals on the compressor and it's as cold as ice-And my wallet is empty-Who cares.....I hate it when something doesnt work:p

a/c is a nightmare when it goes wrong .....

Well, the compressor was covered in UV dye as the seals had gone and the condensor was leaking along the bottom seam which was not obvious from above. I was lucky I did't loose the compressor.

Which seals had gone on the compressor and who did the job for you ?

Not exactly sure which seals had gone, but I take my car for any AC problems to a guy in Chertsey, recommended by Tony@TM Motors in Molesey. I can PM you his details if you like. He is a one man band in a small industrial unit but he knows his stuff and very happy to share his knowledge.
