Another fault on my W210 autobox.

Hi there.

Just got back from a journey to work and on the way I overtook someone.

I came out of D and into 4th then I put it into 3rd ready for the overtake.

I was doing about 40-45 when I put it into 3rd and it overtook flawlessly.

Back into D and on I went.

About 5 miles up the road I stopped for some roadworks and left it in D like I normally do.

Set off and it really was slow.

Checked I wasn't in W setting but no, it was in S.

Got to work and stopped in D, set of and again it was really slow.

I then put it in N and back into D and it was perfect again.

Selected the W switch and it was slower but faster than with the fault.

So I reckon it was trying to set off in 3rd!

Is this something that can be easily remedied or am I looking at a huge bill?

Thanks.

Starting off in 3rd is limp mode, so yes, you do have a fault. You would need to get the codes read by a dealer.

Sounds like a faulty speed sensor plate - not too expensive. I had the same problem and had to get it replaced.

Through some strange reason there are a lot of boxes around that behave like this most from 1998-2000 they can go for months OK then just lock up.

In some cases (known fault) this is down to oxidisation of the connector to the ECU that sits in the car

Great advice as always, chaps, thanks.

Where do I find the ECU and speed sensor plates so I can check them out?

Thanks again.

The speed sensor plate is within the box so nothing to see there, the ECU is alway on the passenger side to the left of the gear shift, the last guy that I sent looking found fluid on the floor and in the ECU, that was on a CLK but it is the same box

Ta, bud.

I'll check that out.
