Not sure why would you go for remould tyres. They will lack the performance of a brand new branded tyre, and tests have shown they have longer stopping distance and worse wet ground performance than new tyres.

They also are susceptible to early failure if they are under or over inflated, driving above their speed rating or even quickly consistently, or overloading. They will also wear a lot quicker than a normal tyre if they are under or over inflated.

Remould tyres may be cheaper initially, but can cost more per mile in the long run.

Years ago i had a set of 205/60/13 remoulds on a MK2 escort sport ok in the dry but lethal in the wet i would go no where near them now.

Stick something better on mate "because your worth it"!
Tony.

Or indeed to the accident and emergency room when your "egg" goes at speed. £30! you value your life and others lives cheaply. Very very false economy with potential fatal results.

Remoulds are not a good idea.

I sympathise. I do.

I once put a pair of remoulds on my Mk 1 Escort - both were egged within an hour. I tried used tyres - even worse results, one of them failed badly. I eventually got to the point where I took the bus if I couldn't afford decent tyres. As a kid I was in the back of my Dad's Ford Corsair when a remould let go at 80mph and we did a full 450 degrees and ended up half way up a banking facing the wrong way. I don't ever want that ride again.

Here's the thing. Tyres are the most important part of a car. You don't have to have top marque tyres, but if you can't afford even Chinese made new 'uns then I respectfully suggest it might be time to dump the MB and move to a crappy old Fiat with tyres like grommets. Please forgive my bluntness.

Without any disrespect to the foregoing , remoulds have come on leaps and bounds over the years since the days of Ford Corsairs and the like .

A modern remould is a much more reliable product than in days gone by ( and I have had them on past vehicles , although not my M-Bs ) .

It may surprise some people that remoulds are widely used on HGV's and on aircraft , both applications which place a lot more stress on a tyre than a mere car .

While I would be the first to agree that the right tyres , and in good repair , are vitally important ( both as an advanced driver and as an ex motorcyclist ) , and that premium branded tyres are measurably and subjectively better than cheaper alternatives ; there are a lot of old fish wives tales told about remoulds , and they are not as bad as the press that they get .

Oh , and part worn tyres , properly checked and fitted by a fitter who knows his business can be a viable cost effective alternative to new tyres ( I would probably rather fit a set of part worn premium tyres than new 'ditch finders' ) .

My mate bought some part worn tyres. He paid 50% price of new tyres - and the tyres were 60% worn - what a pr@ !

The main problem I have with remoulds is that there is no proper regulation to maintain minimum standards. So your purchase will be a bit of a hit & miss. A bad purchase can result in a serious accident.

Personally, I would not use remoulds, but many HGVs and some black cabs use remoulds regularly and there's no problem with it.

I guess it is down to who remoulds the tyres and how, and I suspect that if you are not a professional driver you wouldn't know where to get good ones. So for the average motorists, best avoided.

Just found this after a couple of minutes on Google:

On 1st January in 2004, ECE Regulations 108 and 109 came into effect, making it mandatory for retreaded tyres to be subject to a type approval test. This ensures that retread manufacturers must meet a specified basic standard in terms of the tyres’ suitability for retreading prior to the process, and their performance after it. It is now illegal to sell retreaded tyres that that do not have the “e” mark.

I think some HGV tyres are made to be re-cut which is a different thing altogether.

Indeed , commercial tyres often have extra rubber so that a fresh tread can be cut after so much wear .

When my dad had his haulage business , we had a machine for cutting treads , following the pattern of the original tread ( we would only do this once with a particular tyre as it would obviously be dangerous to go too deep , but it did effectively give you another 'life' out of each tyre ) .

However , cutting a new tread into existing rubber is not the same as remoulding fresh rubber onto a previously used carcass .

I have been using remoulds for years with out hassle i av been driveing 20yrs never had a accident just wanted to warn the members so they dont get robbed
