Saw this tonight around the government flats in the middle of the Green Zone in Baghdad. Its been here for about 6 months i guess - finally had a camera phone with me to take a snap shot.

Green Zone was formerly all of Saddam Hussein territory for his palaces etc. that no unauthorised personnel could cross without getting passed his military first. He had a collection of top ends cars that were seized from the Green Zone during the last invasion.

Now the Green Zone is used for housing military/governments offices/houses and unauthorised personal are still not permitted to cross and the boundary and is still guarded.

Strange how the Smart has ended up there with UK plates still on it.

Thanks for the description of the green zone - having lived in Iraq for the last three years i always wondered what it meant

Anyway, Green Zone is not "proper" Iraq as it is sealed off from everday normal civilian Iraqis...!

Never said The Green Zone, International Zone as the Septics call it, and Diplomatic Zone as the Iraqi Government want to call it was proper Iraq. Generally speaking living in what you call 'Proper Iraq' is not exactly safe for the locals let alone Westerners.

You mean my cleaner is not an everyday ordinary iraqi? Or what about the scores of other Iraqis who ply their trade in it every single day? Are they not ordinary?

I guess you would prefer their wasn't a protected area for the Government in which to operate?

But all that is a side issue - i just thought it was interesting that someone was driving a Smart Coupe out here.

I shall leave others to kick on the political agenda.

Apart from “authorised” Iraqi people to do your/their "dirty" work normal Iraqis are not allowed and only "authorised" personnel. Its not as if everyday civilians can go for a walk over/passed the concrete screen/wall is it?

I'm not saying that there should not be security but Green Zone is not "proper" Iraq as it is sealed/screened off.

That's all it would have been on an 03 plate & it's not worth 10k! Try about 6!

Not necessarily Kate - my RHD came on an 03 plate - picked it up late August 03. Very true about the depreciation though. However, I think Mr Hussein probably has bigger things to worry about right now!

yeah right and if you believe it is the former President of Iraq's car ( although it was actually Uday who was the car collector - but like a lot of things in this thread don't let the facts get in the way of misconceptions) then i have some really good shares i would like to sell you, a bridge, etc etc

Some dealers registered them early! Shouldn't have been released till 53 plates, Paul & I had the first orders from Newbury & Exeter & both were on 53 plates!
