Hello

Currently have sky broadband and very happy with it.

However trying to get both to work with Wep or similar seems to only allow one to work either the PC or the Apple.

anyone have a similar problem?

Can I just set the network to allow IP address's?

Thanks

From a technical point of view, it doesn't matter what operating system your machines are running - networking is essentially the same across any modern OS, they just have different ways of changing the settings.

Your Sky provided router will be assigning IP addresses to any machine that asks for one, so as long as both machines have been set to DHCP (dynamic IP) and don't have a static IP address, you should be good to go.

Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on your wireless connection > Properties > click TCP/IP > click Properties > make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is selected, and "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Can't remember the procedure for OS X off the top of my head and my Mac laptop is not on my desk. You'll find the required setting in System Preferences tho, so have a poke in there.

I don't have Sky broadband , but I do have my Macs connected via my Airport Extreme Base Station to the internet via a Linksys ADSL modem .

My G5 desktop machine connects to the AEBS via ethernet and my two Powerbooks wirelessly via Airport ; my girlfriend's Vista based laptop also connects wirelessly and , like my Macs , can access both internet and my network attached storage and print wirelessly . All of the above was achieved through auto set up on each machine so I did not need to mess around with settings . It was neccessary to install Bonjour on the Vista machine for wireless printing .

In OS X , you go into system preferences , network pane and under the TCP/IP tab you will see the option to connect using DHCP .

My broadband is with UK Online who originally provided an Actiontec wireless router , which also worked fine but did not have the facility for network attached storage or printing .

My sister has just recently had Sky broadband installed and I have yet to go over and set up the three older Macs I have passed on to my niece and two nephews - they currently have one windows desktop connected , the Macs will all connect wirelessly . I am due a trip over sometime over the holiday period so will report back afterwards .

The Sky router gives out an IP address to one machine only. You'll need an Ethernet - Ethernet router to run more than one machine simultaneously

I've tried a number of Belkin routers but they've all failed sooner or later. I now use a Cisco 800 Series and it works fine

Thanks for that - very helpful. I am wrong here - I thought it was an NTL connection, not SKY

Ahh you thought he had a cable network.... I can remember my telewest modem being as you say and only allowing 1 IP, I had to use windows network sharing and a massive crossover network cable running down the stairs, aye those were the days :)
