Approved used 7 day insurance problem

With a used car you can plug the registration number into CompareTheMarket (or similar) at any point, and get a whole bunch of quotes back straight away. Then if/when you want to go ahead with the purchase take out a policy with a future start date to match when you're picking the car up.

Of course if you're trading in you have the option to just change the car on your existing policy, as of the day you collect.
I suppose with used cars most people won’t know if they’re buying until they’ve seen the car , and if it is a distance away , they will want to take it away there and then , rather than have another lengthy trip to collect .

Possibly, but in my experience dealerships don't allow you to view and take a car away straight away. Certainly MB Approved Used - I've bought three over the years and have always had to go back a week or so later to collect. In one case I'd taken a day off work and was on the train down to Eastbourne when I got a call to say it wasn't going to be ready

The one time I bought from an M-B dealership ( Western in Edinburgh ) it was local to where I worked and no hardship to go back .

Other times I’ve bought from smaller independent dealers , and a couple of times from Arnold Clark where we drove the cars away .

Mostly I buy privately though .

Traditionally it allowed the dealer to put VED on the vehicle prior to handover, but as that's all done online now it has little practical value.

We used it on cars previously as it was simple to get setup and seemed to make things simpler while you sorted out your own insurance (or in principle go with the insurer supplying the 7 days cover).

This year it's was just a timewaster. Having to phone what seems to be a brokerage service and go through hoops - and they basically want to sell you a policy. And I couldn't get it confirmed on their website after the call. So I just sorted out my own insurance on the day - quicker and easier IMO.
