A quick query...

I need some snow chains for the car I'm driving down to Italy, and as always, the chains I have don't fit (any of them).

Before I order some chains, I was considering snow socks... I've never tried them tbh, but everyone raves about them so I'm tempted.

The only question is: are they legal in Italy/France? Specifically, on many mountain areas, there is a requirement to carry snow chains or have winter tyres fitted.

Can I use snow socks to comply with this, or must I have snow chains?

Apparently snow socks are not an acceptable substitute for chains in France and Italy.
However the new composite (non metal) substitutes such as Michelin Easy Grip are. These seem to be less risky for your tyres and wheels.

I wouldn't like to use socks for any distance. I'd use them for getting off a snowy side road onto a clear main road. If I was to be climbing the twenty or so hairpins up to a mountain resort it would have to be chains.

Depending on what size you need the chains are 40-60 euros a pair even from the service stations. Bit less in the supermarkets. Much less than in the UK. You could probably buy a set on the way down.

The wheels at 235/60x16 - ended up ordering them for £25... a bit pee'd off that I didn't think of checking ECP!

May buy a second pair for the front from ecp... say, does the club discount work?

Was planning on picking them up from my local store actually ;) (one of the BIG advantages of ECP imo)

And I think I need the 120 or 130; not the 100 :p

Thats strange, I checked your tyre size and got the above

Of these items, theres very limited stock around the network, they are mainly kept in hubs for easy access to branches when required!

Funny part of the saga is that the £25-ish snow chains arrived over the weekend... Turns out, that they were ordered from ECP (just via your ebay store)!

I got the 130's it seems, but 135/60x16 isn't listed on the pack... should I worry?

Nah, no need to worry - they cant fit all of the tyre sizes on the label - plus some were confirmed after packaging :)
