Are these the Mercedes dreaful years/cars?

So was the Garanda that preceeded it... the Scorpio was one ugly car but very roomy and reasonably luxurious. Especially in Ghia trim.

It was either that of the Senator... both were spacious German-built RWD cars with not-too-sophiticated design and very down to earth prices. Sadly, both are long gone.... and there is no modern substitute.

We had Granadas or Senators as company cars for few of the directors. No BMW's, Merc's or Jag's allowed. Serious, no bull. And a Senator 3.0CD was the price of a 528iSE Auto or a boggo 728i.

Both looked like CIA staff cars .

Modern equivalent is the Chrysler 300

Then they're snobs, not aficionados!

Just showing up the futile arguments of what constitutes a real Mercedes; a lot of people think that the A and B Class are not 'proper' yet that's what Mercedes chose to make...

Personally , I think it has been downhill all the way since the SSKL :D

yet that's what Mercedes chose to make...

Doesn't make it right.

They choose to make the CLA and that can never be right. It wouldn't look right with a Geely badge on it.

Steady on - I like the CLA

I think Benz went down hill after they named the all the cars after a girl!

Actually , it was Daimler who named their cars after Mercedes Jellinek after their Germanic name was adversely affecting sales in France ; Benz & Cie continued to sell cars under their own name until the merger in 1926 .

Also , cars built in England under licence continued to be sold under the Daimler name and eventually formed a separate company , favoured by the German descended Royal family in this country .

Would someone tell me what all these "W' numbers represent, over the years I've owned a C270 a avante guarde facelift, A C250 CDI Sport an SLK 250 cdi sport and currently an E 220 cdi amg sport coupe, but I don't have a clue what W's they are.

W stands for Wagen (German for car), and the number is the internal model designation (with a few variants). So W123 is the Mercedes medium sized saloon (the forerunner to the E class) that was built from mid 70s to mid 80s, then the W124 (mid 80s to mid 90s) then the W210, W211, W212.

A few have other initials (R107 is the SL from the early 70s).

If you look at your VIN - it starts WDB (Daimler Benz) then the model number.

So many MBs have had similar designations that it helps identify the actual model.

This is dated, but helps .... or makes it worse.

I have scanned the thread with interest, understandably the vast portion seem to be older models. I only see I response or reply to the W220 and only one note of the W221 with a (?) in the initial thread.

I wonder what that tells me, is no one thinking that the newer S Class needs closer inspection, or do so few S Class drivers have an opinion, nowadays. Maybe because they are so satisfied with there vehicle !

New S class owners are not on this forum - they have a man to do that
