Armour plated 560sel with only 25000 miles

Anyway, unless you're the head of Albanian mafia, why would you want an armored car? ;)

Lets guess what it would go for then......

I would think the 'cost £250K today would mean a new S600 equivalent?'

Bit of body work or not (its old what car hasn't had a tiny bump), 160mph speedo or 170mph (does that matter?) its an old merc....What's its worth.

I'm guessing £6500 complete guess............Next guess

I wouldn't have mentioned the bonnet shut line if it had been a typical 24 year old car on eBay.

But this has only 25k miles from new, "one royal family owner", and described as "like new".

A boywork issue might raise suspicion that the car is not quite as described. Some of the cars at Buckingham Palace are pretty old, but I bet the panels line up ;)

As mentioned above, I'd also bet the bonnet isn't shut, they look like that if they don't close properly, well it does on mine anyway.

However the shut line on the offside is fine:

Therefore something could be amiss, IMO.

Nope, on these models and all w126's there are two separate catches either side of the grille - so one can fully latch-up but the other can still be half-latched.

So it is purely an unlatched bonnet catch. Grease and grime are the usual culprits.

Totally agreed - sometimes caused when closing gently not slamming shut. Pet hate of mine.
Sold now anyway it looks like - but how can the mileage really be substantiated? It is likely to be low bearing in mind the number of vehicles available to the owner. Possible speedo incorrect + no real service history to speak of. Quite often these types of owners employ their own chap full time to look after their cars on which attention is lavished yet not documented like an MB invoiced history for example, so it could of course just had a speedo change one month before MOT time every year - doddle to do then revert back if you know what I mean. It raises some interesting points.
Have you bought it Talbir?

This thread actually raises wider questions about the disposal of such vehicles - they are hardly approaching end of life, but who would really want one? Heavier, thirstier, a nightmare if you get a cracked windscreen (hehehe) for example. Just the kudos of knowing that a dignitary and/or his family/staff/harem or whatever have had their backside on the back seats plus each journey the car did being of "interest".
I remember recently seeing an advert for a G Wagen armoured, it was a late 460 model, maybe '87 or '88, therefore slow by nature before any extra weight was added. It's been advertised for sale for as long as I can remember and if my memory isn't playing up it was about £25-40k. In beige, or cream or suchlike. What market is there really for these? No up n coming businessman/CEO/drugdealer etc would be seen dead (i'll get me coat for that one!) in it, so maybe the only buyer would be a third world dictator or coup-stager ?

Personally, if it was cheaper I would have bought it...

Seems like the ideal car to cross the desert in... rear-wheel drive, comfy and Al Queda wouldn't worry me as much...

I say we should have all chipped in and bought it for Tony Blair. Might have saved us a bit on the current security bill he racks up and we pay. My enthusiasm increased even further when I read the effects the thick glazing might have. Him with a blinding headache, and Cherie throwing up in his lap.. Cheap at twice the price....

Well its gone... someone bought it for £7500..

I really wanted this! I would have paid more than that.

I bet it turns up at one of the classic dealers for 20K+

John...you mention about armoured G-Wagens....when speaking with the guy who rebuilt my Quad Cam for my Hammer (he was ex Strattons), he mentioned that Strattons did a handful of engine conversions on armoured G-Wagens in the 80's that were fitted with AMG Quad Cam V8's....most if not all were sent to the Middle East....would be interesting to know if any of those were still kicking about.

Never be shy to ask if anyone is around to have a look, it may have been a good find.

There is an Armoured G-Wagon at Brooklands
