Arrgh, My Eyes !!

Sometimes (when I see $hit like this) I think MB should have just let the G wagen die a hero's death on the battlefield of safety regulations , but we are talking about a company run by accountants that think a 4 cylinder 2 litre car can still be sold as a C63.

Never mind.

Why when the G Wagen is selling more units now than it ever has done? It is one of the most capable 4x4s out there? Far better than any Landrover with it's 3x factory fit locking diffs, excellent approach and departure angles.

MB has done retro right, it has kept virtually the same design for 50 years and improved and updated it subtly.

Never understood the ugly comments, it's not designed to be a pretty car. If you want a pretty 4x4 buy one of the countless jelly-mould SUVs. The G is a timeless design and a marvel in a time where virtually all cars look like bloated carbon copies of each other.

Or….
Did Mercedes get lucky with the initial design which means that they can tart it up every now and then and simply flog it to some dumb **** footballers, rappers etc?

Plenty of friends, business colleagues and acquaintances of mine have the money to buy or rent one but always end up with a Range Rover and for the reasons I gave wouldn’t be seen dead in a G Class. (thirty years ago perhaps but now you can forget it).

I don’t think it’s ugly but it’s the reputation that goes with it.

If you look into the History of the G Wagen it was an exercise in Engineering. it was function over form back in 1979. Not luck in the slightest.

Just because it features in alot of the Cleb world recently, doesnt make them a complete marvel in what MB can achive The fact they are able to still produce it with todays H&S standards and JLR couldnt with the Defender shows what MB have put into them.

I find it funny how everyone moans at the current state of the car industry, that all cars look identical now. Mercedes create somthing which looks like its from a bygone era and its dismissed on here. they should be applauded for still creating them in 2024.

The AMG version is just a look at me fashion accessory I’m afraid.

The more discerning driver would’ve bought a diesel.

Lambos and Range Rovers are fashion accessories,

911s are Sports cars, THE benchmark for Sports cars.

At the Nurburgring for example, every 3rd car is a 911, you once in a blue moon will see a Ferrari and almost never a Lambo as they are huge boats to drive.

So this car is actually a "G500 conversion"? AFAIK the G500 and G63 at that time both had a 5461 cc engine so you can't tell from the listing what's fitted here ... might explain why there's no engine bay picture ...

I suspect whoever buys it won't much care what engine it has, provided it's loud. Tarted up like that, it's more of a giant fashion accessory handbag, and not bought for its dynamic qualities. However capable it is off road, if you turned up in that at an offroaders' meeting they'd wet themselves laughing, and doubly so if they knew what you'd paid for it.

Yes , agreed . Shame to see such an accomplished vehicle reduced to nothing more than a tarts handbag and global laughing stock.

The factory 463-generation 4x4^2 models were based on the G 500 (or G 550 in North America) so it authentic to start the conversion with a G 500. The current ce Weston 4x4^2 is based on the G 63.

Who knows which AMG bits have been fitted (or not) in a DIY conversion though - listing it as a G63 is somewhat dodgy. The MOT history is interesting too:

67,102 kilometres is 41,695 miles ... which is lower than the previous MOT. As a LHD import maybe they changed the clock/cluster, but it had miles rather than km the year before :dk:
