E270 CDI 142,000miles running like a dream but a question?

Can anybody tell me when the ATF gearbox fluid needs changing and if the filter needs to be changed..any advice :dk:
whats the best fluid ?

I think my inde told me every 30,000 miles to 40,000 miles IIRC.

Not sure how old your car is but given the mileage, my guess it is has done mainly motorway miles which is least stress to the gearbox, which will have been at optimum temperature most of the time - so it might not be too bad...

However, without any kind of history of it being done, I would probably be scheduling it in to be done personally (which I did when I recently bought my E55K)...

37K as I recall - mine was done today at 38K, during a minor service.

Not sure about the 5 speed box. On the 7 speed box manufacturer states a once only change at 45k. No further changes needed. I did this but felt it was being too risky. So at 89k Olly changed it again. He stated it was very black, so I'm ignoring manufacturer and would say on the 7 speed every 40-45 k.

Mercedes recommend every 37500 to 50000 miles. use genuine ATF and filter!
my advice is to not do it yourself but I can tell you how to do it if you need advice.

Many thanks for the advice I will book it in for a change with my local garage next week been quoted £67 from europarts for oil 2 x 4.5l sump gasket and filter.
I see torque converter was mentioned is that a specialist job to drain or can it be done at my local garage who are good and have used for over 20yrs.

You cannot drain the torque converter on your vehicle, only on early Mercs pre 2000 :thumb:

I have mine changed every 60k miles, most of my miles are motorway. I think this is crucial to avoid gearbox issues and has worked for me over 550k miles in my last 2 cars. This is one of the few jobs I trust to an independant, £125 versus £230 from my main dealer.

Are you quite sure the fluid from Eurocarparts is the correct type? Asv far as I am aware it is not the commonly used Dexron III. I asked my MB specialist and he said he would only ever use the MB supplied ATF.

Using the incorrect fluid could cause serious and expensive damage to the gearbox.

I Had mine done on 128K miles, I think previous to that it was around 50K miles.

Its like a new car, gearbox so much smooth and just drives better, Amazing difference especially as I thought 'I bet I don't notice anything'

One week on

Had a superb ATF job done at PCS while I waited :thumb: then driving around for the next week, I too have noticed its just like a new car .

Would recommend this to anyone who is not aware of the last time their box had its fluid changed.
