i had a good grumble about this on another forum and thought i'd bring it up here especially as autoexpress slagged the merc of in last weeks mag for being overpriced
audi has been taking the p..s for years with there pricing but gets away with it
autoexpress compared merc 220, bmw 320 and audi 2.0d
to start with the merc was an auto and had a sport pack!
audi dont do an auto unless you opt for a 2.5 which is a better comparism
then add that the merc has met paint, centre console, half leather, sport seats,17" wheels, folding dimming mirrors, cruise....i could go on
stick all this which in my opinion is not only desirable but necessary options for a car in this price bracket and you have:
merc £27375
bmw £29405
audi £31390
and this is without taking into consideration that merc has a further 1200 quid off at moment with free upgrade to avantguarde se spec
also you can get a discount off merc but forget it with the bmw
i just bought one and considered all the above and in the REAL world the merc worked out a whooping £5000 less than the bmw
so dont believe all you read in the press in my opinion mercs have never been better value!

Maybe thats why the BMW drivers think they own the road, because the feel the have paid extra for it!
;) :D

Mercs have never been cheaper would be a more accurate comment as to them being better value - well, there seems to be a lot of problems with the newer cars (rust, electrics poor and expensive dealerships etc) so I think the jury is out on that one.

20 years ago Mercs were built by engineers who took a pride in their product. they were over engineered built without compromise and designed to last for ever but an "entry level" car cost about the same as a house and to see one on the road was unusual but there are plenty of 20 and 30 year old cars still around being used on a daily basis

These days they are built by accountants and that entry level car costs about the same as a Ford Mondeo and is just about as commonplace on our roads - Mercedes must have made a few compromises somewhere along the line to achieve this and in the long run that can only be a bad thing which devalues the marque.

So, cheaper yes, but better value? Ask that one again in 20 years time :)

My own opinion is that no car manufacturer is going to 'over price' their product, simply because it is a competitive market.

Members of a Mercedes-Benz forum might be of the opinion that BMW or Audi vehicles are over priced? Likewise members of these forums might feel that Mercedes-Benz are over priced?

My view is that all three make excellent vehicles which their owners should be proud of.

John
