Audio 20 - w211 '03

Hi all,
on the instrument cluster where it says AUDIO OFF - it sometimes changes to AUDIO and "---" momentarily and then back. At times it wont do this for days then some days it will switch many tims. Any ideas why this happens?

This sounds like a fault on the canbus or the MOST ring. If the MOST ring is broken then the other devices on the ring shutdown,. This can include phone, Harman KArden Amp, linguatronic and Cd changer. If the devices actually work whilst the display says '----' then its most likely a CANBUS fault.

Thank you Alfie as always. All the devices work fine - the radio does not shut down or anything if this comes up. Come to think of it, I have never seen this come when the audio unit is on (radio/cd playing). Only comes with the unit off. My car does not have phone etc. Simple Audio 20 Cassette with in dash cd changer. No error codes current or stored.

This sounds like the cluster losing 'contact' with the AGW (since you have the Audio-20-Cassette) - it talks over CANbus.

The AGW is the tuner, amplifier, diagnostic gateway and fibre optic controller. It interfaces the audio system to the rest of the car.

There are software updates for the AGW, and also a number of little software issues in the early Audio-20-Casettes (like they wont work properly with the UHI phone system)

You could get the AGW software flash updated with Star Diagnosis.

But it doesnt sound like its giving you any real issue, so I wouldnt bother !
