Well it's done well to get to 160K with no ATF change.
The fluid doesn't break down as such but it's now circulating loads of particles with it.
50-60K is a nice figure for a change which will extend the life of the box.
The rules are changing. If you read the MB check list for cars going over to, I think Moblio or what ever its called, the gearbox fluid is changed every 40k miles while the car is under that scheme.
It seem that what is good for the goose is not good for the gander with MB.
Many dealers still argue that it should not be changed.
The lifetime fill refers to the lifetime of the vehicle whilst in ownership.
It does not mean the ATF will last 20 years. It means it'll last about 3-4 years, which is the average life of the car on a lease plan or such. Its all about keeping service costs down, so the cars look more attractive propositions for fleet buyers.
My advice is to change it immediately. Theres no reason not to. You think it performs well now, it'll perform better once done.

I have just come back from my workshop having changed the gearbox oil and filter on my 1998 C250TD its done 80,000 miles and the old oil was very dark and not clear. so your oil at 160,000 will be well past its best, you need to use the genuine MB oil as there does not seem to be an equivilent. My car drives a lot better now with smoother changes
