Can anyone help? I have a E220cdi on a '1999 Vreg' that has a intermittent fault. It's when you slow to a stop, the gear box will hold in 2nd before for too long and then select 1st making the jolt forward. It doesn't always do it but when it does it will smoke from the exhaust when you are stationary? This morning it was a cool morning and the car drove silky smooth. Go it in this afternoon and the fault appeared again.
I would really appreciate some help or guidance to some who could help. I live near Portsmouth, Hampshire.

Thanks.

give cole@mbs southampton a ring google it always been very helpfull and keen prices..and loads of no rush free advice ...

Got in touch with them today. They are quoting all kinds of gearbox faults starting at £500.00 upwards!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not sure what to do now, the car is 15 years old now so its getting to that age!
The garage are seeing the car Monday 18th so fingers crossed. Been reading up on other sites, most of them say check the fluid level in the gearbox? I'm sure these chaps know what they are doing, just got a horrible feeling this will spell the end of my car!

I did mention this on the phone to the garage, he said it may 'mask' the problem in the short term. I thought this originally, as the transmission fluid get hotter it may not be man enough any more? i.e. breaking down slightly.
Is that a huge job changing the fluid and filter?

I had slightly different issues on my C240 1999 where it depostited a substantial amount of fluid on the Shrewsbury bypass and I thought I had killed it. An oil change and some additive to cheer up some singed drive bands did the trick - masking the problem for another 60k or so until we decided it was time to say good by because of other faults.

So, at that age, masking problems might be solving them for all practical purposes.

Changing fluid and filter is fairly straightforward, Ollie of PCS (the garage seeing you next Monday) wrote the definitive "how to" on this.

What a great day, straight through the MOT with no advisories!! Not bad for a 15 year old car with 110,000 plus miles on it. Might treat it to its gear box fluid and filter now!!

how did you get on with the auto box issues?

Strange, I have been pushing the car a little harder (i.e foot to the floor), where as I normally don't push it to hard. The problem with it holding onto second gear when coming to a stop has gone, now at around 30 mph-ish it will get confused what gear it should be in? it makes the car jolt and the revs jump up and down without any throttle movement, it also does this with the cruise control on at 30-ish mph? Any clues anyone, is it still likely to be the gear box oil?
Other than that it's silky smooth.

It could be an engine issue.

Need plugging in firstly.

Oh great! It's just had all of the injectors reconditioned, MAF sensor replaced and the second brake switch (not the one that does the brake lights).
What else could it possibly be?
How much to plug in and find out what it is?

£20 for the initial plug in a code read.

If it needs more time I will advise you of the estimated costs.

Thanks for that, I will be in touch soon. I may pop in to see you as you are local to me. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Olly,
Thanks for your time Yesterday. I will have the car with you Tuesday as arranged.
A little more info for you, when we switched the gearbox back into "Summer" the fault that I couldn't recreate for you yesterday has come back but only in the "Summer" position. The fault is the car holding onto second gear too long when coming to a stop. Hopefully it will still be doing it on Tuesday so you can see it doing it.
Anyway I will see you Tuesday morning to drop the car off, very refreshing to talk to a merc specialist who knows what he is talking about and who has clearly has a wealth of knowledge. Cheers, Dave. (HCR Ltd).
