Hi

Just had my Bi-annual brake fluid (SBC) changed and the rear diff oil changed in the interests of good service practice.

Well-trodden ground I know but I was going to have the Auto trans fluid and filter changed shortly too.

I spoke to MB for a quote (just for a laugh) and they said mine had been done at 36K which fits in with MB recommendation. They said it should not need another change.

Does this seem right or should I still invest a couple of ton to have it done anyway?

Thoughts anyone?

MB (as indeed did others) changed their minds on this a number of times.

ATF is subject to thermal loads, shearing forces etc during it's life and therefore the performance of your ATF can only degrade with use.

We would not leave any other fluid unchanged for life or for very high mileages / periods of time so I would not with ATF.

A change of fluid for around £200 is a lot cheaper than a replacement gearbox :D

What's your mileage now? You should have it done again at 72k or 4 years from the time changed.

I would get it done - recommended roughly every 40k miles

There was nothing wrong with how my C55 AMG shifted gears when I bought it at over 100K miles, but as I could not find an ATF change in the service history I had it done for peace of mind.

Should pay around £150/£200 depending on where you go. Like others say here, "Lot cheaper than a new gearbox..."

Before you get it done I'd inspect the condition of the transmission cooler lines.

I had one of mine rust through and put the car out of action, and googling around it seems this is not uncommon on cars of this age (assuming yours is over 10yrs as it has an sbc pump)

Worth doing at the same time as a fluid change if they are getting crispy.
