The car is a 1998 w210 300td auto.,127k.
With no warning the gear box seems to pull away in i think 3rd gear and after stopping and putting it into n then d it pull away in second but will no change up even at 4500 rpm.The atf and filter was changed at 110k and a new maf was changed at about 120k.When you manually change the gears nothing happens.Am i expecting to hear a new gear box or is there something im mising, any info would be very helpfull:crazy:

It does not sound good. What is the ATF level like? Do you have any leaks? get the fault codes read first the drop the 'box sump pan to have a look for metal debris.

Don't know where i am now, took the car for an early morning drive and it has been raining all night here. Car pulls away now in all the correct gears and you can change manually and kick down is normal. The only slight problem was when i stopped on a few occasions it wanted to pull away in 3rd gear but this was rememded buy putting it back in neutral and then into D (drive). Has checked under the car and there is no ATF leakes.
ANY suggestions:cool: ??

Auto gearbox e300td1999

I myself am starting to worry, I had the gearbox oil changed not so long ago. I have done 117k and i dont know if this is the milage that maybe the gearbox starts to play up. Be good to see if other members have had issues.
I did talk to a taxi driver and he had his replaced at 139k and this was in use every day from new as a taxi which works hard.
Be intrested to know where and how much a replacement box costs.
I did have a kick down type problem where it would not kick down, but since the oil change toch wood, its been fine.

Its not mileage related - it is abuse + maintenance related - my 200k mile MB auto gearbox works just the same as it did when it was nearly new - probably as it has had the ATF and filter changed every 36k miles. I am sure it will do another 200k with the same maintenance.

Thanks thats good news. Are MB dealers help full as I got the car at 90k would like to know if the GB oil was changed before i had it!

You will need to know where it was serviced - if not just play safe and get it done. I would recommend finding someone who knows their way around the car - there is more to it than drain and re-fill. It is not hard but there are a few things that a muppet could mess up for you.

Get the codes read. The ECU is seeing either implausible gear selection or implausible speed being reported so is engaging the last known good selection.
If the ECU can't see any report of gear selections or speed it will engage 2nd gear in limp home mode.

Suspect the electronic plate in the gearbox.
