Autoglass despair, Autoglass disgrace.

Autoglass scratched my car

I had Autoglass fit a new screen to my W124 coupe, I owned at the time, almost unmarked bodywork until I noticed a nasty scratch on the drivers door when the fitter finished. When I pointed out the scratch he said that it could have happened in Tesco`s car park, as he said this, I looked down at his overalls side pocket and noticed a big bunch of keys that are at the same height as the scratch on my car, and must of happened when he leant over the front of my car to fit the new screen.
The technician would not have any of it so I phoned autoglass but they wanted proof they damaged the car, as I could not find a way to do this I had to live with the scratch and touched it in myself.:(
I had no problems with the windscreen itself though.

Frank Spencer.

The original Autoglass fitter revisited to fix the wiper and rain sensor problems.

He hadn't refitted the connection to the wiper motor properly but all was well with the wiper operation once this had been rectified.

He also refitted the rain sensor.

To test the rain sensor he got a 5, litre sprayer from the back of his van and squirted some water at the screen.
Whilst doing this he dropped the full 5, litre sprayer on to the new screen. The container then bounced off the screen and on to and down my new bonett.

We checked for damage but thankfully we couldn't see any.

Fitter drove away..

An hour later, I saw the Autoglass van at the bottom of my driveway. The fitter was waving at me. I got to the gates and he gave me my ingnition key back!

So, I took the car for it's first run with the new screen in. The very same problem of distortion and curving white lines on the copy screen installed a few years ago was there once again. :wallbash:
I did tell them that the problem might well be there again with a copy screen, but..

So, now Autoglass have ordered a new screen from a Mercedes dealer and will install this on Saturday morning.

I have a chip on my screen that is repairable. I've read so many horror stories about Autoglass I've bought a repair kit and will repair it myself.

Have a number of windscreen chips on 51 plate w203 and fully comp insurance with LV who say Autoglass need to do windscreen repairs if they are to be covered by the policy. So, if I have read the gist of some posts correctly, is the wisest course of action if the chips cannot be repaired to insist on an Mercedes original screen and accept nothing else, even if it is from the same OEM?

This week had Autoglass repair a couple of chips on the 124. Have to say they did a very good job. However feelings about Autoglass are mixed as I too had the problem with the auto wiper sensor when they did a new screen on our old 203. In the end they took to the MB dealer because they could not get it to work properly.

Im having my W124 windscreen replaced tomorrow by Autoglass
Its tinted and has a darkened shade band at the top
I asked for a proper Mercedes Windscreen they checked and said they had one as per the above - i dont really mind if its not Mercedes spec but i do want it to be tinted and tint top
the screen is laminating a little at the edges so will be better off in any case

any advice / comments / things to check for

I had my C63 windscreen replaced by Autoglass last year - i had to send them away to get a proper one they were going to fit some aftermarket thing as its a new(er) car i wasnt prepared to accept anything less than the genuine article

oh gawd ive read back through the thread... i think i might stand by the fitter throughout the process:eek:

My 124 Estate windscreen was replaced today. (Bloody Audi drivers!!)

It was 15 years since the guy fitting mine had done one!! Fortunately I organised to have it done at Ian Walker's place and his team took the wiper assembly and trim bits off the windscreen for the guy and put them back on. The screen came with the correct tint and colour bar across the top. I have no complaints thus far - We will see what happens when it rains. I had a good hoover round the base of the screen and back of the battery whilst the going was good.

Thanks to Ian and the team.

Be there when they take the old one out. Delamination on the 124 can be a sign of rot in the A pillar or even worse across the base of the screen. Don't let them fit the new one if there is corrosion. Trust me. My son had a lovely 300e-24 with a little delamination but totally rotten A pillars. Don't want to worry you but just be aware of the possibility. The good news is they can be fixed. Good luck

is the wiper assembly and trim a bit tricky to remove and fit ?

Not especially. It helps if you have done one before. Worth greasing the mechanism if they do take it out. They are noted for sticking or wiping very slowly as they get older.

yes i have heard this is possible (rot)
you say dont let them fit the screen if there is rot - if they take the screen out then i see rot im 12 miles from home as i had planned on fitting this in at work
will i see the rot when the trim is removed? before screen removal?

the nearest this car gets to rot is when its parked next to a rusty car ive not found any - and ive looked - hopefully the screen area will not be the first and advanced

I hope you will be fine. When this happened to our sons car it was very obvious as soon as the trim was removed. The screen was pretty much resting just on rust. The screen cracked somewhat but we just drove it 10 miles to the body shop very slowly. It was actually hardly sealed in. The corrosion was so bad. Body shop sorted it though. Your car looks in beautiful condition so you should be fine. If they do fit a new screen over corrosion it will delaminate and the rust will get worse.
Our estate has a non MB screen from some time in the past. It has the tinted band and seems fine. No fancy sensors on these old cars.

Another thought occurred to me. The guy who did my sons car insisted on doing the work at the workshop. Allegedly delaminating screens can shatter very badly.

thanks for the comments
its always very useful and prompt on here to us non techies
wiper mechanism lubrication & rust damage around the screen area - heres hoping ...
if all goes well the "magic bus" will be improved:thumb:
if not i will have to fix it, hey ho

I am also a non techie but have a little experience of 124s and their little foibles. The wiper mechanism is certainly worth doing regardless.

I had a chip in my W124 cabriolet before I bought it but never noticed until early this year. The screen was also delaminated around the sides. I thought rather than fix the chip, the delamination will still be there so I had the screen replaced. I used a local independent guy and I was happy to see that there was no rust or damage around when the screen was removed. The new windscreen also has the blue tint on the top. The work was done before the bright and sunny April we have just had and I am happy to report that I have had no problems or leaks.

I think the guy is based in Redditch if anyone wants his details. He came recommended to me from a friend who had his screen replaced on his merc that had rain sensors. Autoglass gave me a £750 quote when I asked.
