1st time thread so not sure if im putting this in the right section, but here goes.

The automatic box on my mercedes v230 automatic leakd fluid resulting in the box burning it self out, after much searching I was able to locate a salvage box.

My problem now is that the gearbox is not functioning and putting the engine into safe mode, you can feel thet the gearbox is selecting the gears but not able too move.

The engine will only produce 2000 rpm at the most, I have tried putting the car on a diganostic computer but this can not get into the ECU, I now have too bring the car to mercedes to go on their expensive diganostic computer.

Would no a cause for the car not moving

I have checkd the crank shaft sensor, the speed sensor, the gear selector cable

any suggestion

please

and

thank you

tommy

Have you tried the fluid level? Also when the gearbox was put in did anyone change the fluid filter inside it? Are all the electrical conections on the box fully home?

yes approx 8 litres of gearbox fluid was put into the gearbox and all electrical connections have been checked, I have also tries using the wiring loom of orginal box and also the donor box

Maybe the gearbox ECU is faulty?

it is going too mercedes tomorow morning so will no a lot more tommorow

After in being on the diganostic, the problem was not enough oil pressure, resulting in the torque converter not functioning properly.

2 causes for this are

1 torque converter not fittd properly

2 oil pressure system broke

what one should I strart with

Looks like the box is going to have to come out to fix the torque convertor problem. So I would start with that and while its out investigate the oil pressure problem

box has come out with mechanic saying thjere was enough oil in and around the torque converter,

so how can the mechanic check the oil pressure

im at my wits end and feel like lighting the van and walking away

Ok the torque convertor sits inside the bellhousing. It is a sort of rotary pump that feeds oil under pressure to the gearbox. You say that its not been fitted correctly. To rectify this problem you will need to split the engine from the gearbox so that the torque convertor can be correctly located. Oil pressure, are we talking engine oil pressure or gearbox oil pressure? From what I read here I assume its gearbox, correct me if I am wrong. I have a spare torque convertor which I will photograph tomorrow and post here for you. I also have a spare gearbox. I will strip the bottom off and photograph for you too. It may help, I dont know, but if at all possible I will try to be of assistance.

The autobox has sets of planetary gears that are selected by hydraulic valves pressing on clutch packs. If there is insufficient pressure in the box then tth valves can't operate. There is a pump driven by the input shaft to create the oil pressure required.

The torque converter is a fluid clutch that passes drive to the input shaft from the engine. The greater the speed differential between the engine and box the greater the amount of torque passed through.

If the converter has failed or isn't passing drive to the input shaft then the oil pump won't be turning so won't be pressurising the oil.

You need to deduce if the input side of the gearbox is turning. You MIGHT be able to do this with a stethoscope against the casing.

mechanic has now given up trying too fix the automatic box of my V230, I foned aa auto box specialist who was saying that the problem arises when putting a salvage box in the computer of the car rejects the new box, im not totally convinced bout this as his next sentence was a sale pitch lookinh £1300 too repair my orginal box.

I now have a mercedes v230 unable too drive with most off the drive components loosely attached

if you no off any things I can speciffically check please\ let me know

thanks in advance
tommy

Im at my end of my wits with this car/ van , been quoted £1300 for gearbox rebuild, wondering if I should

1, sell car with faulty gearbox (at reduced price of course)

2, fix car gerabox at my own cost

3, leave car too a different mechanic , let him check it over

any advice welcome

Will I Just Drive This Too The Grave Yard And Leave It There

To be honest I think that could be perfectly true. But that is not to say that it can't be corrected. If that were the case then no Mercedes could ever receive a replacement gearbox.

I would go to the MB dealer, explain what has happened, and ask them to connect it up to the computer and reset the main ECU and the transmission ECU, plus any others they can think of.

What do you have to lose?

1 litre of petrol & a box of swan vestas should sort it!!
sorry i couldent resist it. i dont know anybody who,s had any luck with these spanish so called mercedes. my local indie wont even look at them:eek:

i think now I am going too have to get the orgignal gearbox RECON.

the expensive option at the start but now in hindsight probably would have been the cheapest

thanks for everyone 's help, this is the best MB owners site
