Back to the fold E class buying tips please

When I was tight with finances I had bought a W210 Classic with only 40k miles and that car served me well. I’m still kicking myself for parting with it.

It was my S60 in the same situation for me, just heard I'm not being made redundant so thats great news, so once we catch back up may be able to buy somthing a bit newer and if the new to me Mercedes does me half as well as my S60 did there will be smiles all around.

I'm 54 and looking at the old cars and motorbikes that I used to fly around in, the prices they are bringing just wish I could turn the clock back and have stored them all, would be a lot better off now?

Great news about your job Geoff. You must be relieved.
Yes SarahAnn200 your not kidding, lost some good lads from my team though, we all started at the same time so were a tight bunch, I have been through it far to many times in the past and got fed up of contracting so took the steady money long term rather than the boom and bust of contracting.

Just waiting to here if we have to take a paycut, we offered to try and save one position and if thats goes ahead its a return back to the homelands for me yipee :) :) :)

Right here we go again, I have a guy fingers crossed buying my car tomorrow, so the very short short list is a 2005 E270 Estate with 157k for £1700 the one I mentioned with the ABS light on, he has had it repaired or a 2007 facelift E320 with 190k for £1800 may get a little cheaper, I'm not bothered by the SBC braking as can get it refurbed for £125 choices choices what do you guys think is my best option?

The facelift should have less chance of any electrical issues , at those mileages both are going to need “bits “

I know buying at my price point I will need to spend but found another e class estate with 115k on it but he wont budge from 2k for it, plus ideally I wanted a 320 but the 270 would also be ideal, the o7 plate car is a 320 but its the elegance model so from reading up, heard they handle as good as your Nans armchair I think was the exact quote , I dont want to go hooning around but as we are out in the country it may be a bit wollowy like some american car, may be I'm over thinking it, but the E270 is in my fav dark grey but know the facelift should be more reliable . got to stop reading online or I will never pull the trigger :) :) :)

You know thinking of it and considering SBC, some newer cars will have a DPF.
I'd rather have SBC than a DPF any day of the week, devils work those things. ;)

Check the MOT history of anything you are going yo buy, if buying private see if the seller has had the car a while and has some service/repair history on the car.
Always a bonus seeing how the car has been looked after.

Watch out for the "selling for my mum/sister/aunt" brigade who are clearly dealing in cars and usually give you some bull about the V5 and history.

Just assume everyone is telling you nonsense and do your own research, there are cars out there.

I always use the MOT checker its a great site to get some inside info, also the goverment site for spec, tells you when the log book was last changed, so the guy telling me he has owned the car for years and the log book was swapped a few weeks ago caught him right out. I do favour the 05 E270 for £1700, but that was the one I initially posted with the ABS light on, did my research and sensor was a bargain price so we agreed £1600, he gets the fault fixed by his mate now wont budge from £1700 so I hate that, I'm old school I turn up when I say and if a price has been agreed that should be the end of it, I never asked him to get it fixed I was prepaired to take a chance, and good point on the DPF, when we lived in France came to the UK to sell the Mrs SLK and buy a van to bring our things back, all I found where wrecks so ended up buying a Vauxhall Vectra SRI CDTI Estate (We all got to slum it now and then) sure enough on the way back from the Midlands to North wales the DPF light came on and it dropped into limp mode, a 600 quid bill later and it never felt right, vowed I would never get another vauxhall ever again so lesson learned and I'm sure the Facelift 07 E320 would have a DPF?, so still swings it to the E270 but his price increase has done my head in, so may offer him 1600 take it or leave it and that may make the decision for me?

And I have come accross the selling for my mate/Aunt/dad etc, Im pretty sure the E270 he is a dealer but he is saying its his car and he is only selling to buy a van, last logbook issue was 2 years ago so he may be telling the truth, but amazing the amount of mint cars and bikes that when you stand in front of them are clearly not mint at all

My facelift 2009 E320cdi doesn’t have a dpf. If the exhaust is pitch black inside it doesn’t have one

W1ghty be up all night now having bad DPF dreams :). Right decision made, Mrs Roberts did not like the look of the 07 E320 elegance, said with all that wood it was an old mans car (I'm 54), glad she thinks I'm still young lol, she never liked theblue interior of the E220 either and loved the 05 E270 that was my original squeeze, got the guy to forget the £100 he paid to get the ABS done so happy, just got that lovely drive Aberdeen to Sheffield and return, why are the trains so bloody expensive?

You must be mad, I wouldn't go from Aberdeen to Sheffield unless the car was very very special.

I find it hard to look at E classes now with basic spec (cloth seats, no comand etc.)
Must be that I'm a snob.

Yes defo Im mad, but nothing local in my price range and Volvo just sold leaving us car less and living in the countryside a car is a must, the way I look at it is I'm back on Furlough so getting paid for sitting on my fat ass so why not, cheapest option was Megabus but they only go to Manchester, train was £167 hire car is 50 quid plus fuel, at least I will enjoy the views travelling back and forth. I did a job on a Nuclear Sub so was driving every week Ellon to Plymouth and return home come Friday to do it all again

Well quick update, what a day, got up at 2am after about 2 hours max sleep, quick shower and cup of tea, hit the road at 2.20am for the journey down to collect the car in Sheffield so after a few quick nap stops got there 10.00am, guy brings the car better than I expected, ABS light back on as he warned me nothing else, it drove great, no other warnings pop up I buy it and fair play it drives like it has 15000 on it not 157,000, then the warnings start to appear, grey brake workshop visit I assume is the pedal count, esp warning and cruise control not working so suspect these will be sorted once I find and replace the faulty sensor, good job I just bought the iCarsoft MB V2.0, think it will earn its keep, also car wont lock and drivers door makes a clicking sound, so suspect this is the bouncy lock thing, I read up on it a while ago so will find the youtube vids but from memory think the fix is a pita to fix but cheap, good job I went into this expecting to get lied to, suspect he must of cleared the codes before bringing it round for me check, but think it was cheap enough and for the 420 mile ride home it averaged 42 mpg and I was pressing on towards the end so better that expected for a 2.7L Motor.

You have to remember that "sensor" error is very likely the ABS ring, not the simple little electrical sensor.

To get to the ring it is a suspension strip down job which will bring its own problems and extra parts that need changed.
Many times the electrical sensor is stuck in there and needs drilled out as well so you end up needing this too.

Best of luck but for the record I still think you are mad.

Ha ha Patrick I will admit defo mad ha ha what I find if you buy local cars the corrosion due to the extra sault can cause lots of issues, may be Im paranoid, but i like an adventure and like every other car I have viewed with no lights on, they usually rear their ugly head sooner rather than later, and it will probably be the ABS ring, but a great way to test out my new iCarsoft scanner, I love a challenge
