Hmmm my windscreen has cracked over a 1ft square area :(
However this means a new windscreen will be fitted next week in time for the17th :)
Every cloud.....

Will you be removing the interior trim yourself in preparation for the windscreen man or will you be putting your faith in them not to damage anything?

Let them do it, that's their job. Not all windscreen fitters are careless, had one replaced recently and the guy was A1. Chatted briefly to him before he started, mid-30s chap, 10+ years in the job, faultless workmanship.

I had more hassle with the admin/booking side of things than the fitter!

This was Autoglass, FWIW.

I hadn't thought of that :(

Its highly unlikely they would need to remove any trim anyway. doing it yourself might result in you damaging somthing! - A-Pillars have the springs of death attaching them to the chassis, impossible to fit back 100% IMO

I think Sp!ke was referring to the fact that they can damage the A pillar trim when the fillter cuts around the screen when removing.

I had a screen replaced by a national company who made a right mess of mine but to be fair they paid to have it replaced without any issue.

Autoglass did one for me, they did a very good job.:thumb:

If they arent removing the wipers and plenum they are putting faith in luck. To seat the glass you need to have the ability to seat the glass as the robot would in the factory.

First, removing the remnants of the old polyurethane chips the body paint and primer must be applied. This removes the original plastic clips which hold the glass in place and prevent the glass from sitting too close to the body. The clips are included in the Mercedes glass repair kit.

Second, There needs to be a bead of new primer and adhesive applied to the new glass and that bead doesnt "slide" into place. That is why the wipers and plenum must be removed.

Third, The car must remain stationary till the adhesive cures. The glass is a structural part of the car and not just a glaze. If the glue is smeared or weak it will eventually leak.

Every single leaking window I have seen on a Mercedes was done by "experts" who know nothing about Mercedes.

Coding takes place to reinstate the rain sensor function.

i have seen a knife go through the ceiling trim.

Will you be making him wear cotton or linen white gloves?

After the experiences I have had in the past I remove all the inner and outer trim before the glassman arrives - it makes his job easier, makes me less nervous about damage, plus I can check that the glass is seated correctly before replacing all the trim.

I am taking it to the autoglass workshop as it is better than a mobile. Im waiting until next week in order to get the right windscreen in. Hopefully all will go well :)

Also ask for a genuine windscreen. It makes quite a difference.

Yes, insist on a genuine screen.

I was unlucky enough to have two non-genuine screens fitted by Autoglass in my previous 210 and they were rubbish.
Major distortion and each time they put their hands up and replaced with a genuine screen. Apparently, there are 12 different screens for a 210.

Unfortunately, my current 210 already has a non-genuine screen fitted before I got the car.
Driving on a motorway at night is a hypnotic experience because the white lines curve in the bottom left of the screen.

Had fun and games with Autoglass here. LINK.

Pressing too hard while polishing the screen, no doubt.

Hope it goes well, it's always a concern.

I had a large chip in the screen a couple of years ago, it was a borderline MOT fail, but is just about ok. I had it repaired as I couldn't face the hassle of a screen replacement.

Regards, Neil
PS I hope this is you done with problems! You seem to be posting for all the wrong reasons these days.

Lol. Whilst it is true that I have machine polished my windscreen, I wasn't when it broke! Re my news of late re paint work and now the windscreen. ... I haven't mentioned the scratch :( or the kerbed wheel :)

Make sure the windscreen wiper plastic nut covers are replaced, I've seen so many nuts left uncovered after the windscreen has been replaced and the fitters don't seem to bother fitting them back on

We had a Range Rover Sport - Autoglass Changed the Heated Screen and got all the old Parking tickets out where they had dropped down and cleaned all the other previously Inaccessible areas well pleased !!

Auto glass replaced the screen on my S203, excellent service and the tech was very careful. Top job!

In what way?
My W210 had a new non-MB branded screen and there were no issues.

The fitter used a winding cheese wire type tool to cut the sealant, again no issues.
