Oh I do hope I get this post in the right location?
While I have your interest I have just had a problem with the warning lights showing on my instrument cluster 'A' Class when I drive.
I found out after trial and error that if I stopped re-started the car and drove off the lights didn't show
I spent a couple of hours cleaning detector heads and sender units to no avail although it did appear to make the problem appear less.
Just when I thought I had cured the problem was back, Ironically I was pulling away from Mercedes Parts at Chichester when they re-appeared again: but knowing that MB charge approx £85.00 an hour labour, I needless to say kept going!
I had in fact been to the parts to order a brake switch as something told me there was a connection when braking and the lights coming on. Both the ESP & BAS systems being closing connected with the brakes.
I received the stop light brake switch in the post a couple of days later and fitted it in about 90secs no tools required, in fact nothing required bar the replacement switch and common sense!
Switch replaced the problem was cured and has not returned that was some weeks back.:bannana:
I was know inquisitive and needed to know why the switch was the cause and of course pulled it apart with care, all the details with photo's are on my page18 , just go (www below) so if you suffer the same problem it is cheaper to replace the brake switch even if it doesn't cure the problem than have a diagnostic test done first which probably won't find the true cause anyway.

Read blarol's response to my post on SVC global he had problems and MB (Aus) the never did cure the fault, but then they didn't change the brake switch! :)

A faulty brake light switch will always bring up a fault code on a diagnostic text.

Glad you got it sorted.

Would you like to comr to the GTG on saturday as you are only local?

BlackC55, well at least the information that a diagnostic test will show a switch fault is helpful, although I don't think our Australian owner Brarol would necessarily agree, but even at £50 a test and I suspect that's the minimum it would cost me? I can buy 6 brake switches and the fault will in my case at least be gone, rather than just being told that the switch is defective with possibly no reason/cause being given by the fitter/diagnostics tool operator, mechanic or even a technician. Then there is the cost of the switch and fitting time. The switch cost is only just over £8.00 but I would be interested to know what the fitting cost is in the average MB outlet? Because it would take longer to make out the bill than fit the switch.
I do of course appreciate that in some instances the diagnostics on modern cars is essential, but a lot of the common since seems to have gone out of mechanical engineering by the introduction of such tools.
As for your initiation, sorry to be so ignorant in but what's the GTG:o

Time to fit a brake light switch on a A-class is 0.2 of an hour. That includes getting authorisation from the customer, quoting the customer and getting the part from the parts dept and fitting it. That equates to 12 minutes which is a fair time.

The labour time includes the fafing about too not just the fitting.

0.2 x £99= £19.8+vat

Diagnostic test (Short test)

0.3 x £99 = £29.70+vat (good value imo)

The cost of the diagnostic test is generally alot of money because the equipment is so very expensive and it must earn its money back. A dealer will have at least 3 star machines (MB diagnostic test kit) They are £455/month to rent plus updates.

The bas/esp light on in your car could have been so many things but the most common is the BLS.

Hope this explains a few things.

Oliver

Yes that sounds very fare to me, wow that a lot of money to hire Sar diagnostic tools isn't it cheaper to buy and update, or does it cover their repair as well?
Next time we have a strong wind from the West pull up you anchors and shift this way a bit we could do with some real competition, although I must admit John Haynes at Goring, Nr Worthing is very fare and also very good, just the place to spend a day if you want to see some real old MB classic cars. He’s the boy the sort them out. Oh and thanks Grav, us old boys are so ignorant to these modern abbreviations like this text stuff 'gobbledegook' no wonder kids can't spell! Or should I say cannot spell?

Yes that is that is a lot of money and explains why diagnostics is so expencive, But I do feel myself that it gets used on some occassions where common sense and experience would come up with the same answer.
Oliver your be pleased I think? to hear I have added you business address to my links page 95, 47000 readers in three years so it might produce some custom. Oh and my rates are cheaper than even yours "Its free to you " .
Good luck

Hi guys, sorry to change the topic slightly, but I've got the same fault popping up on my C-class. Does anyone know it if it is covered under the Service Plus contract?

Thanks in advance

I doubt it but just phone a dealer and ask.
