Battery for E300TD

Hi! My car is E300TD 1998 W210.

The battery failed on me several times. Initially I atributed it to very short journeys but it has been recharged since wih a very good charger (CTEK MXS 5) and after some rasonable length journeys and 5 days of no use even doors would not open.

I checked the drain current and the circuitry when the engine is off and lights are off drains 0.25A. It is higher than I would like but I would not expect it to drain 100Ah in 5 days. Is the drain of 0.25A too high anyway?

In the past I could sart my car with this jumpstarter Heavy Duty Jump Starter 700A 100PSI Compressor | Maplin . This time it could not start the car. Only by leaving it connected to the battery for about 1 hour I managed eventually to start it.

So I suppose the next stage is battery replacement?
Will this battery be suitable (as eurocarparts website suggests but their ebay page does not) Bosch S5 Car Battery Type 019 100Ah 830cca Sealed 5 Year Warranty 600 402 083 | eBay Note the picture is of 013 battery but it is actually 019.

My current battery has these numbers:
600 131 080 replaces 600 044 076
0 093 S60 03N
12V 100Ah 800A (EN)

If it is difficult to start with the jump starter...you have more of a problem than just the battery.

Well that is true. One of the engine preheat plugs has been broken for more than a year making the car more difficult to start. But with that jumpstarter it would not even turn the starter motor. It would click and that's it.

I thought may be because the jumpstarter is just 700A (though it does say peak current is 1400A) while the battery for this car should be 800A. I suppose it worked in the past because the battery was not totally dead and was still providing some current while now even doors would not open. Also in the past th jumpstarter was kept indoors an was warm and this time it had to start the car aftr being kept in the car for couple of weeks (fully charged ) .

Is drain current of 0.25A for car circutry too much or is it normal for his type of car?

Should I change the battery or check something else first?

The drain shouldn’t be any more than about 50ma, the alarm uses most of that.
Is the alarm in working order, has the siren ever been replaced, test it by locking the car with a window open, wait 60 seconds then open a door/s and or bonnet while the car is locked… the siren should sound and the hazards should flash.

Yes actually drain is 40-80ma with 40-50ma most of the time.

In the past I was testing with all lghts off but with car unlocked. This time I opened the window and then locked the car fully. After abut 20-30 seconds the current dropped to 40-50mA, but ocasionally was jumping to 80mA. So I suppose electronics drain is not too huge...

Battery was last replaced 02/08/2007.

Do you think it is the battery or something else that is at fault as well and New Batery will not help?

Is the battery I have in mind Bosch S5 Car Battery Type 019 100Ah 830cca Sealed 5 Year Warranty 600 402 083 | eBay suitable?

Did you test the alarm, if the car alarm is not working properly then disconnect it.

I would have thought that battery is about right.
I just replaced my own battery last month, exactly the same battery as in your link.
Depends how healthy your 7 year old battery is, on a car that is used infrequently it is wise to put it on a trickle charger, particularly in winter.

Yes, the alarm is working in that if the car is locked and then the door is opened either through open window or using the detachable mechanical key (that's what I had to use today to get in!) then as long as battery has some charge the siren switches on.

Today in the morning the batery did not have enougph charge to unlock the doors and siren did not start until I conneted the jump-start battery.

So you think that there is quite a chane that my battery might be healthy and the problem is elsewhere? Should I check something else before replacing the battery?

Do the hazards lights flash when the alarm siren sounds?
Do the hazards lights flash 3 times when you lock the car?
Do the hazards lights flash 1 time when you unlock the car?

The alarm siren is the brains of the alarm system, it is common for the siren to give trouble when the become about 10 years old, if your siren is the original factory fitted unit then it is now about 16 years old… at that age, I just wouldn’t trust it, it might be wise to unplug it for a while just to see if there is any change in your situation.

You don’t want to be replacing the battery only to find the fault is still there.

Is the alternator charging the battery ok, one of these… Digital 12V/24V LED Car Cigarette Socket Voltmeter Voltage Battery Tester | eBay... is very useful to monitor the running voltage of the car.
