Brilliant!

BBC iPlayer is now on the main PS3 menu bar, so you can watch anything there on your TV (in full screen).

Mrs BTB is a convert ... using it to play baby BTB's favourites from CBeebies :o

The free 'Vidzone' app. is pretty good too.

If you tell me the iplayer can play HD vids onto 1080p, I shall have to go to Tesco without delay....

I don't think iplayer on PS3 or via the web browser is streaming you 1080p video quality.
The bandwidth would have to be very large indeed.

I could be wrong though.

Fair do's

Would that be the case if you let the vids cache or buffer to the PS3?

But I guess it is time to buy a PS3 Slim...

No - "Autumn" is still the official line, but the push is to get everything sorted before christmas.

BBC iPlayer is definitely not HD, but quality is fine from a normal viewing distance on our 42" TV.

I've never used iPlayer on the PC, so don't know if the PS3 implementation is 'tweaked' in any way. You can view full screen or in a window, and there's a 'low quality' mode for slow connections. Our internet runs typically at about 2.5 mbs (not super fast), but full screen in 'normal' mode plays fine.

There's a PS3 add-on that turns it into a digital TV recorder:

BBC NEWS | Technology | PlayStation to record digital TV

About £60 if you shop around.

On a related note, I recall reading something about Sky on xbox, some time back, seems to have gone quiet

Presumably you need an Xbox Live subscription for that?

The nice thing about the PS3 is that all the online stuff is completely free over your standard internet connection.

:) That's HD enough for me....

Last time I looked, Tesco had PS3's for £229....

Offer may have ended though :wallbash:

Be careful you know the spec of PS3 you buy.
Last time I looked only the higher speced ones had wi-fi. I'd consider this an important feature if I wanted to download movies.

I'm 99% sure all PS3 models have WiFi.

The other nice thing it does is that you can access content on your PC via the wireless router (or wired network). So you can play anything in 'my music', 'my pictures', 'my videos', etc. on the TV. Great for slideshows when the family are round, and because we have a reasonable sound system on the TV we basically use it as a Hi Fi when we want music on. Obviously you can play music CDs directly on the PS3 if you want to, or plug in a USB stick with stuff on and play it from there.

I'm sure you're correct BTB 500. It was at least 1 year since I looked.

A mate has a PS3 and like you uses it for games, music, video and pictures. It's a very comprehensive piece of kit :) Now if they also had controllers and games like Wii.....

LOL we have a Wii too, the balance board etc. is fun.

My PS3 is an original one ... got it on UK launch day :)

Apart from anything else it's an excellent Blu Ray (and upscaling DVD) player.
