Becker Grand Prix 7990 (Yellow)....£650+!!!

Just missed one, my bid was £205, it went for £206.

Bought an older indianapolis (without btooth) for £180 a month or so back.
Today bought the proper indianapolis 7950 for £360.

That means I now have Indianapolis in most of my cars :)

The holy grail is the classic style Becker Mexico one for my Pagoda... but they fetch £2K +

I think the hysteria surrounding Becker's decision to pull out of the aftermarket ICE market has weakened some what and prices are starting to settle with these late style Becker's.... Theres still some dreamers who are chancing their arms but another year or so will restore sensibitly throughout the market....

Jay, thats some good buying there fella.... I think that classic style Mexico you want will never come down though...

Never understood why people love these becker units? Yeah they are good, but they are not top end, they are mid range and sometimes pretty unbelievable prices based on consmetic appearance. The alphine units from the 90s are pretty awesome and look good on a older car. Ive bought what many people argue is the best headunit of all time. The MX5000 Mcintosh. Im thinking it will match the black interior and black birds eye wood well and its understated.
Here is a photo of one in a w140.

The MX5000 Mcintosh looks nice I have heard their equipment before it is one of the best I have ever heard

Macintosh used to make a double din for a blitz Subaru legacy very rare car Porsche used to fit their triptronic gearbox also to the car also

You felt you were at a live concert the sound was so good

Try this one

Look at this on eBay:

MCINTOSH MX-5000 CD TUNER HDCD 24 BIT BB CONVERTOR (100% BRAND NEW) RARE

The mcintosh mx 406 which looks the same just the cheaper version is oem headunit on ford GT Supercar and clarkson when reviewing it on top gear said it had the best stereo in the world. If you want the plastic look like the beckers then the best unit is nakamichi for sound quality. Looks oem mercedes. Only trouble with the Mx5000 is it has no integrated amp so you need an amp to run it, it only provides the signal.
The layout is like the old fashioned stereos but it has a black glass face, not very good match for the plastic interiors of japanese cars they stand out a mile. Ive fitted it on my car and imho the black glass and the black maple wood its looks very classy, almost perfect match, bu the main reason i did it was the sound. It now makes the old system cd sound like a poor signal radio station.
Biggest difference to normal stereos and high end one is the sounds of the song sound like a blend of sounds and the the high end each sound is seperate clear and on its own, makes you appreciate the artists in a different light, if your into that sort of thing.

I dont think they are strictly mid-range, sure they did mid range systems, but their top end stuff was justified and hence they were found in top of the range Mercs like SL's, S-Classes etc, and Ferrari's and Porsche's as OEM equipment.... Hardly mid range...

Im sure Mcintosh sound amazing but theres no way that MX5000 looks better than a retro Becker Mexico imo, like the one Jay wants...

Also Nakamichi is very overated.... It is a brand that relies on past glories and in actual fact is a shadow of it former self.... Car audio was never their strong point anyhow, home entertainment was, and they excelled at making cassete decks, the Dragon comes to mind.... but their car stuff is a let down, a friend had a CD300 and it felt like it belonged in a Nissan Micra, build quality and looks were tacky to say the least and the sq was not much better, good but nothing that befits the legendary name...

I agree Becker stuff is expensive but iirc a Becker GP 7990, like the one at the top of the post was something like £270 brand new... i think that was reasonable, its just sky high at the moment as people are still hysterical about them pulling out of ICE.....

Ive never read anywhere that the becker units where anything but mid ranged. ferrari and porkas have always had mid ranged stereos 2 speakers if they have stereos at all, not exactly important in a ferrari with a v12 at 9000rpm behind your ear. Looking at my price list for sl in 97 it was nearly 2k for the exquiste stereo option, what becker unit was this? I had the silverstone becker one, button fest plastic fantastic, very 80s 90s i suppose. Sold it for £100 which i was suprised by.

The Becker Cascade was one of their top of the range models... Im sure you will enlighten me that it is at best low to mid range... But like I say it was one of THEIR top models.... and better than anything that Nakamichi have mustered up in the last few years....

But Nakamichi went bust 10 years ago

After that, I think the name was resurected from insolvency to 'brand' home hi fi's with.

I have a Becker Cascade Pro - it is excellent and it is on a par with the best aftermarket units available and that includes Alpine,Pioneer, Kenwood.
I also have a Nakamichi MB75 and again it is excellent. The sound quality from the CD playback is appreciably better than other in car CD players. Nakamichi was famous for cassette recorders/players and their TD1200 in car cassette player was excellent.

mid range is still good, mid range by definition is good quality so dont get offended. Low end is you halfords £150 units, that do mp3 ipod bluetooth mw bmw fm hmv etc etc.
High end is competion grade audio, near perfect sound reproduction, thats why the mx5000 unit has no amp inside, no ipod no sat nav, nothing except radio and able to play cds. Everything in that small space is for cd reproduction or IPOD is you go through the digi in and the DAC. I think it retailed new for around $4500 USD when they came out.

Becker isnt competion grade (high End), it isnt meant to be either. It is a good quality stereo with a good integrated amp and some nice functions, ie mid range.

Nakamichi always did home hi fi's.

Their cassette tape decks were known to be the best.

Nakamichi always did home hi fi's.

Not really, they did separates. By home hi fi, I mean like SoundSpace SS5 Stereo Music System/Bang and Olafsen type of things.
