Hello all
I have a 2004 c220cdi, the aux belt rattles/vibrates at idle but is ok anything above idle
i have replaced tensioner and belt but to no avail any ideas guys?

I'd be interested to know any opinions on this - my old E220CDI behaved the same way and I put it down to the low idle speed, as the same parts were new. The only doubt in my mind was whether the crank pulley has the rubber damper separating the hub and pulley, as these can fail sometimes.

I checked mine was running true at the time and it never altered through my ownership of the car.

Ian.

I had the alternator pulley changed on mine - that cured much of the rattle (didn't fix the wife though :o )

ive heard of the alternator pully before did this stop the belt flapping?
( good luck with the wife:D dont know of a cure for that problem)

Look at the crankshaft damper and the alternator pulley to see if they wobble at Idle

I didn't know if the belt was flapping at the time: certainly the rattle went away changing the pulley. If i were u i'd follow malcolm's (television's) advice: far more knowlegeable (?) than me ;)

!!!ITS THE ALTERNATOR PULLEY the one way clutch has seized on the pulley causing one side of the belt to go slack!!!!!

100% sure that is your problem as i have replaced 100s

You do need the correct pulley tool to remove it though.

E220 CDI Belt Pulley, Same problem?

Hi, I've read the posts above and think I have exactly the same problem. Looking at the belt on idle (worse in gear) the top of the belt vibrates up and down a good 2 inches. The tensioner (well it looks like a tensioner) on the right is vibrating at the same time, it looks like a blur about 1" from side to side. This goes away as soon as the engine is revved at all. The rest of the belt runs smoothly.

My question, where can I get this fixed at a fair price in Hertforshire (Potters Bar)? MB quoting me £92 per hour for diagnosis, plus labour, plus parts. But can't do it until next week. I don't really want to use the car like this as it looks like the belt will get damaged. Car's done 73k miles, so would a new belt be advisable?

thanks
