The garage has run a diagnostic and found the MAF/MAS resistance to be low on my 1999 S430.

I don't mind buying a new one but not a MB one at twice the price !

Where's the best place to source a replacement that's more reliable than an Ebay one but cheaper than a MB one ?

Cheers

Martin

Hi Martin,

Don't take this the wrong way, but if I were you I'd go for one from MB. You've bought a very complicated (and excellent) car in the form of a W220 V8 S Class, and using parts of potentially dubious quality is a false economy.

Have to say, I agree - why have such a complex special car and then try to cut corners:crazy:

I begrudge paying MB £280+vat for a sensor that Bosch manufacture for them, and that I can get for £164+vat from a Bosch dealer.

I appreciate it's a complex car, and I wouldn't consider buying from an unknown manufacturer, but people don't call then 'stealerships' for nothing !

Euro car parts do one for your car which is exactly the same as the merc item. I have fitted one recently with excellent results.

It is the same Bosch part but just in a different box.

Fair enough but it sounds like you can answer your own original question ;)

But not all of us refer to them in that way either ;)

You have clearly identified an alternative source for the part you are after so I don't get the purpose behind the thread - are you after sourcing it even cheaper and then potentially of dubious quality?

Don't get me wrong - I'm not having a go - just trying to work out where you're coming from :)

I'm pretty set on buying the Bosch part from someone, and thought I'd ask the question to see where other people have bought them from.

BlackC55 has already saved me £5 by recommending Euro car parts, maybe someone else knows a outlet selling the same Bosch part for £150, or a local outlet where I don't have to pay P&P, you don't know unless you ask !

Maybe it seems like I'm penny pinching, but this month I've replaced the gearbox valve body at £600, the two Lambda sensors at £380 and 3 ignition coils at £can't remember. In addition to that I've had to insure both cars and tax the Marcos ..... I don't like April !

Any spare change for a cup of coffee missus ?

Dont get a cheapo one off eBay, I had an OEM one fitted last month, as a result it now feels like a new car!

was this from dealer???? or is it a bosch from some where else?

Did you change the MAS just for the sake o changing it or was it on its way??

My Mechanic got it from MB (trade price) after my car started misfiring on 3 cylinders + many other errors. Before these errors started, If I used the kick down, the revs would redline before I got above 30Mph!

Id never noticed the car being sluggish as I owned a C180 before. Now its fixed, it feels like an AMG (well, maybe not that fast).

I had a bigger smile on my face after the new MAS than when I got the car itself!

I put the MAS problem down to the fact that most people on here claim the C240 is sluggish.

I raced my brothers W208 CLK320 a few weeks back and it only just beat me. :bannana:

Hope this helps

Having wasted money on non OEM parts, then had to pay out again once I realised my mistake, I'd have to agree. Bite the bullet and get the MB part. :)

Out of interest LeighW, how much was the MAS for your CLK? I've got a feeling mine might be needing one and whilst mine has a different engine to yours the figure is bound to be similar.

The price that Euro car parts qupote is never their BEST price. You can always beat them down. I paid £114 + vat for an s-class type.

You don't need to go to MB for a MAF. The price they quote you will be for the insert + the pipework it fits in. In other words, too expensive.

Go to your local Bosch dealer and buy just the insert. Its exactly the same part, MB use Bosch parts. You'll save a fortune, after all MB buy their MAFs from Bosch.

Bosch = OEM.

Agree, would reccomend ECP, as the best price. If it is no good, just take it back, they are really good with returns.

I got my new MAS from Europarts. I didnt buy the OEM one and went for the cheaper one.
Hope I made the right decision in the long term. So far no problems...........only time will tell.

what parrot says makes total logic for this i think.... and would answer the original question....

IIRC, it was £240ish + VAT. Not cheap...

I had mine changed by the stealership a while ago and it came to something very much like that IIRC.
