I think there is a place in London called the ECU Clinic which repairs them. I've never had any dealings with them so do not know what they are like.

Is this reasonable?, how much are they new?

If it is the engine ECU you are talking about I had mine done by the main Mercedes dealer last year and it was just under £2000.00.

Yes that is not an error I have the bill to show, mine was a 1999 W202 C-200
just under £2000.00

When mine packed up I got in contact with 3 company's that repair ECU'S but they said they could not do mine as Mercedes had sealed them and only Mercedes could repair it.
It was in there workshop for nearly 2 weeks because they said they had to send it back to Germany for repair.

The only thing I can think is they have found some way round the problem.

Either the car will not run or it will missfire.

Mine just would not start I had all sorts of weird things.

Sometimes it would start fine and run perfectly another time when I tried to start it all I would get was a clicking like starter motor problem, another one was the large fan by the rad would spin very fast so I had to turn off quick before the car took off,and another was it would start but there was no power and if I turned off and tried again sometimes it would work.
Because 3 auto electricians could not get it right I had a new heavy duty battery,new earth leads on a lot of places and a new starter motor.
I also bought a new ignition switch because one doughnut said it was that

What's the part number of your ECU? I believe some are coded for the individual car & some are plug & play.

I think he should be OK on a '97 c class as that's before CAN was used.

Mine has not got CAN so mine must have been coded for my car only.

I didn't think the units were paired until the Control Area Network system of communication was used.
Might be wrong though.
