Question as per title. Any recommendations/experiences from our IT experts? risk v cost quotient? new batteries inc etc?

Would help to understand how old you want to go? Are you thinking last year’s model, or 5-6 year olds?

Fancy kit, or bog standard consumer?

Have you considered “borrowing” a student, teacher or employee discount on a new one?

I have a MacBook Air available if any good…

You wont HAVE too.....lots of people use earlier versions of windows with no problems. I will stick with 10....my PC cant take 11 according to the "Window 11 Compatibility Checker"....but its a good fast PC so I'm not forking out until I have to......like when it comes to a grinding halt!!

Do be aware of the increased risk of being compromised and be xtra vigilant. When operating systems stop receiving updates then they are not protected against the vulnerabilities identified after that date, and could be exploited by baddies.

PC’s may “seem” expensive but given what you can get from them the cost over their seven year life is tiny.

All useful comments but no names of reliable retailers-or does everyone buy new? time is factor here -cost is a factor here- rather than a long term picture -something that only has to last a couple of years max

I think the reason we're asking these questions, is that there may me members on here with an old laptop that they are willing to pary with, if this helps.

I've used THESE PEOPLE before now Graeme, they've usually had what I needed at the time.

Having said that, my last couple have come from the "bay of dreams", notably from THIS SELLER.

Neither of the above are recommendations though I've been happy with both, in fact I'm actually using a recon (£199) one to type this. :)

Throwing some ideas against the wall, with no idea if they will stick.

Apple obviously sell refurbished. Essentially returns

They also sell last year’s stock, as do many of their resellers.

Students and teachers get roughly 25% off the major manufacturers: Apple, Dell, HP etc. But you have to order through their gateway.

Friends and colleagues are often a good dource for used.

Personally I always buy via a relative who develops AI for Apple, always buying the latest MacBook Air. A year on I clean it and sell it for about the same amount of money. (But it’s cost me the capital tied up in it at 13%)

I would trust any local “refurbisher.” Only an EBay vendor with huge volume.

(In the distant past I created and ran a Remarketing programme for one of the Industry majors)

I know all about that ..I am still uesing my old Windows XP along with a good security suite

Windows XP machines can be hacked easily in less than 2 minutes. If you use them, keep them off the Internet!

I dont use the XP now it is just a back up and pictures . ..But like you i need to go upstream , and j go with the Windows 11, or buy a good internet security suite for this Windows 10 set up i am on now , i use FireFox now along with the Windows security
