Big white smoke?

Hi

I was driving my car quite hard when suddenly a big white smoke came from the back.

The smoke was so big that I blurred other cars behind me.

I checked underneath the car and I could see some oil along the exhaust pipe.

Any ideas would really help.

Thanks :)

Turbo failure if you have one, massive oil leak (split or broken oil pipe) and landing on something hot, as you've discovered. Open the bonnet and check in there. What's the car?

Hi thanks for your reply. I really appreciate :thumb:

My car is W220 S500, automatic transmission, NO turbo.

Maybe it is due to the oil leak? But can a small oil leak cause so much white smoke?

The smoke stopped after like 10 seconds or a little more.

..

I had a head gasket blow and it caused the white smoke, do not drive untill u know.

You've already mentioned that you've seen oil on the exhaust so it's obvious something's amiss. Start looking for that leak. And don't drive it until you find it! A small amount of oil will cause a lot of smoke, and even more smoke if it catches fire and burns your car out.

Actually, I just had the transmission oil changed 5 days ago. It seems that the mechanic did a messy job. I had to rinse the exhaust pipe to remove the oil that was on it.

When the big white smoke occurred, I was accelerating hard (from 3rd to 5th gear).

I noticed a very unusual sound during the acceleration. It was like as if my car had a supercharger. I once created a thread on this matter and I was told that it was the fan operating.

It sounds like your turbo is on the way out to me. Can you smell burn't oil or see slightly smokey exhaust on tickover after a run?
Sorry ignore that, I've just noticed you have no turbo!

I once overfilled my W126 gearbox after it had had a leak from one of the cooler pipes. On a fairly high speed run I got the same cloud of white smoke when accelerating. I got it home and found it had been leaking from the gearbox breather down on to the hot exhaust.
Once draind and refilled to the correct level all was and still is, fine.

Thanks for sharing your experience. But I am not sure that it was the transmission oil which was leaking onto the exhaust pipes.

Can engine oil make white smoke as well?

Thanks!

Your mechanic worked on the transmission, left oil all over the place, and I would imagine he has over filled it thus the oil pouring out of the breather on heavy acceleration. I would also be worried that he put the wrong oil in too, thus the screech:wallbash:

If you value your car find a competent Mercedes mechanic.

if u do not get oil burning smell from the exhaust it is overfilled gearbox. if not burning oil from exhaust you are ok to drive.

when floor the 500 the extra injecting opens and feels like the car about to takeoff and fly, this non turbo just standard injector booster

get gearbox oil checkout level and possible drain n refill to the right amount

Find the 'leak' and get it sorted, properly!
