Bit harsh.

Received speeding fine today, 80mph on M5, mobile on bridge. 😩
Unlucky.
I could have got a ticket every time I drove on the motorway in the past.
By the letter of the law 79mph is the max allowance ISTR. (10%+ 2mph)

Maybe a driving awarenes course although i read this on the RAC website

How much is a speeding fine?

This is a bit of an urban myth.

The 10% + 2mph is purely discretionary and not all forces apply it.

Technically 71moh is prosecutable

My mate dave received two last year he paid no fine and got no points.

Care to share what you think your Speedo was showing Alan? 😁
My speedo was showing 92, it turns out it's very accurate. Fortunately I'd got it down to that after stamping on the brakes.

I thought I was going to get a bigger fine/more points at 92mph.

My first points in over a decade which is probably why it was so lenient.

10% + 2 mph is the 'enforcement threshold' in the current guidance issued by the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), so my understanding is that you'd now expect to get a ticket at 79 mph. As mentioned officers have discretion to act outside these guidelines (so yes, you could get prosecuted for 71 mph), but this isn't normal practice.

You will almost certainly be offered a speed awareness course unless you've done one in the last 3 years (the normal range is between 79 and 86 mph).

Yes I’m hoping to get offered a course.

I got 1 through the door 103 on the M62 j9-j10 smart motorway
No points or fine as it took too long to process (6 month's is the limit)

Depends on the Police force

Same happened to a colleague for 102 on the M25. He was all set for a ban too as already had 6pts. He'd been stuck in traffic and was rushing to catch a flight.

Odd really, you'd think they'd prioritise the very high ones. Or perhaps they're mainly focussed on just rounding people up for speed awarenesss courses? Another colleague got one of those for 46 on the M42 variable when it was set to 40 at 6AM in the morning for no apparent reason. Oddly he didn't seem too bothered about it.

Nice slice of luck my friend.
