OK guys, sorry if this offends anybody but I feel it's got to be said

This is a PC advice and support thread so can anyone tell me why that virtually every thread ends up with a "well if you were using Linux this wouldn't have happened" type reply to a question about Windows? ~these reply's are not helpful, in fact they are worse than that, they make you sound like some smug little geek sitting there saying "I told you so" :)

I wish Linux would work for me, but it doesn't now and it won't for the forseeable future, the available software is so limited it makes it as viable as a hydrogen powered push bike to someone who is moving house.

So the last thing I need to see is so called support that doesn't help anybody saying because they use Linux they have no virus problems - I've got an Amtrad 64CPC - that's never been hit by a virus or trojan and never will be - does that mean it's O/S is better than linux?

The moral of this rant?

If you want to help someone give them advice that is helpful

I use the Mac too which is a unix based operating system now, (not sure if Mac OS out numbers Linux or not) but software is fairly readily available

There are fustrations when browsing the web, when websites won't work with Mac.

however EVEN more fustrating for me, is when websites don't work for a standard MS Windows PC using the Mozilla browser. Why web developers use script/rollovers/or clickable hyperlinks which ONLY work with MS Explorer I don't know! It isn't hard to make a hyperlink or buttons work cross platform, - it's an absolute fundamental basic. If you follow standard HTML rules, it's hard not to make hyperlinks cross platform or cross browser.

Also some website's choose to only support Explorer arghh!
Worse case is financial institutions e.g. like Egg for their amalgamated accounts facility, forcing people to use the least secure browser (Explorer) doesn't make any sense!

I've just done a quick forum search on the term 'linux' and didn't think it was overly pushed down peoples' throats (8 thread mentions out of 60 odd and only a couple of those where people behave as you claim) hardly
virtually every thread ends up with a "well if you were using Linux this wouldn't have happened"

I myself use Windows XP 95% of the time but due to my interest in OS's generally do use Linux now and again. I tend to use Live CD distributions, Mepis in particular, so that negates the hassle of having to install another OS on my HDD and I can save my settings to a USB memory stick/flash drive. There is quite a bit of software released for Linux but granted anything more esoteric or specialist is probably not going have a Linux version.

Horses for courses I suppose. I hear ya rant :) can't say that I agree though, and no offence taken ;)

S.

p.s. The Live CD distros make great emergency repair discs ('get out of jail free' as I like to call them) if your regular OS, be it Windows or whatever, ever goes AWOL.

As you said, this forum is called 'PC and I.T Support', not 'Windows and I.T. Support'. If someone makes a suggestion or observation about another OS that can run on a PC, whats wrong with that and who cares?

All I can say is bring on solaris !
